I have a 91 Explorer that died on me yesterday -- transmission. I'm going to get it fixed and drive to Pcola for OCS (12 July). I'll probably buy something in Pcola once I'm commissioned.

Can anyone recommend a dealership I should visit? Does anyone know of some deals for Navy folks? I've seen a few people menion Sandy Sandsing. I'll probably buy used.

Thanks for any tips.

I've not been down there, but I've been told that if you go through USAA you can get 0.0-3.9% financing for newly commissioned ensigns. www.usaa.com

NavyFed also has a career starter loan, 18k for 1.75, or something like that, for a four year term. Lot's of guys get new cars with it.

Or, if you could handle the payments, you could take that 18k at 1.75 and invest it elsewhere at a higher interest rate...or pay off CC debt etc. I would maybe use it to invest (if I didn't have other debts at higher interest to pay off)...but that's just me.

At 1.75% you end up paying about $18,650. If you invest it at just 5% interest for the same 4 years you end up with about $21,880 for a difference of about $3,230 of free money (pre-tax). That's not too shabby...and you could probably at least double that return, which would leave you with $26,354, or a profit of about $7,704! Then, take a nice vacation, keep it invested, or buy some toys.

I would look on EBAY. No kidding, I just bought a 2001 Excursion Limited for $20,250.00. The sticker on it new was $44,000. I so I got a car a year and a half old with a little under 40K miles and saved 24K. I also got a warranty that goes to 100K miles. So... I'd look at what you want and go from there. I saved a bunch of $$ and got a great car. I got the loan through Navy Federal and it was apporved in minutes.

Odd...

I've a '99 Exploder whose transmission just took a crap 2 weeks ago. My extended warranty (glad I bought it!) covered it, though...still, maybe the next ride won't be an Exploder...

See you there, Joey!
