BUD/S after OCS

I know that officers have the option of going to bud/s straight out of OCS. My question is that since bud/s has such a high attrition rate (70% I believe but I'm not sure) where do you go afterwards if you drop out. Enlistees just go back to their old jobs because enlistees can't enlist into bud/s, they enlist for a different job and are later rated for bud/s but what happens with the officers? If they drop outdo they pack their bags or are they reasiigned to whatever job is open? Does anyone know how it works?

Stevew,

First of all, officers don't have the "option" to go to buds after ocs. Before you go to ocs you must be accepted into a community..ie Aviation, SWO, Intel, SpecOps, or SpecWar. The only officers that can go to BUDS after OCS are those that were picked up by the SpecWar community for a chance to go to BUDS. If you dont make it through, then you can be redesignated to SWO, INTEL etc.. This is the same for the aviation community. However, this redisignation policy is probably going away. The policy on the ADM's desk here says " If your not an Academy Grad or College Program guy..ie owe the military $$$, then you will be discharged" This is because all of the communities are full and it is becoming extremely difficult for DOR's or Attrites to get redesignated.

Thanks Dave, that's what I meant. Being picked up by SpecWar. Thank you for answering my question that's what I wanted to know. Do you know when they are beginning to institute this thing with being discharged. Are DOR's and attrites given an option of where they want to go or are they just picked up by whatever is open.

Steve,

I can only comment about whats going on here in the aviation community. The discharge policy is on the desk to be signed as we speak. As far as when it will happen, I wouldnt guess on a date. Probably pretty soon. The SpecWar community may or may not be doing the same. Normally when you DOR or Attrite, you put in packages with wherever you want to go. Then you do an interview with that community. However, I havent seen anyone go from a high profile pipeline ie aviation or specwar to another high profile pipeline. Example Seal attrite to Aviation or vice versa. So, basically now days, guys are waiting 2-4 months or longer to get redesignated. Its not a fun or easy process. So that being said, make sure you know what you want before you raise your right hand. Just thinking that it may be fun or cool won't work. The pipelines are not easy or meant to be fun. Its a gut check to make sure you want to be here. Don't get me wrong, there are good times and fun times. Just remember its a training command. Pay your dues first then enjoy being in whatever community you joined.

I think that it is an admin discharge. Nothing bad that would keep you from getting a good job.
