For the length and breadth of navy history? Perhaps try Craig Symonds’ “The U.S. Navy: A Concise History.” Everything by James Hornfischer will get you through WWIi and the Cold War. The same goes for Ian Toll. Although older, try Fletcher Pratt’s works on naval history. For older, but valuable stuff try James Barnes’ “Naval Actions of War of 1812” and Theodore Roosevelt’s “The Naval War of 1812.”

Since the search function is kind of a pain if you're looking for biography recommendations:

The Quiet Warrior, by Thomas Buell (Spruance). Older, but a classic and nothing else really for Spruance

2 recent Nimitz bios: Nimitz at War, by Craig Symonds and Mastering the art of Command, by Trent Hone. Symonds unsurprisingly a little more traditional, both excellent on their own way
