What are the rules about single Ensigns keeping their BAH when going on a 6-month deployment? Is it against the rules to move out of my apartment, move all my stuff into storage, and continue receiving BAH? I know that everybody does it, but what are the legal implications?

Nope. Perfectly legal. The Navy used to require leases when you signed up for BAH, but that went away. I think there's discussion about bringing that back, but nothing solid so far.

You can also put your stuff in storage and still get full BAH and when you get back buy yourself a nice welcome back to America present (I always do)

What's this BAH thingy for again? I forget. Somebody help me out.

Hey if the Navy pays you it, then you might as well spend it as you choose. Do you use all of your per diem for food and buying toothbrushes?

I make no judgements.. Just speak from what I've seen in the fleet. My CO put all his stuff in storage and rented his house out during 2 deployments. Of course the rent covered his mortgage payments, so the BAH was pure profit. If he doesn't seem to think that the money needs to be returned to the gov't, (CAG agreed too) then I would surmise that there is no problems with it. There were also 3 JO's in my squadron doing the same. No one kept it quiet and nobody thought they should return their BAH.

P.S.
How can I get the job as the guy who drives that truck thingy that shifts the lanes on the Coronado bridge? I've wanted to do that since I was a little kid. I tried a search, but no luck. Thanks!

Yeah, me too. What a weird, yet effective way of doing things. I can't say that I've ever seen that system anywhere else.

They've got one here in Honolulu, as well, but they call it the "Zipper lane."

Zipper lanes in Massachusetts too. I think they were one of the first to do it (no? yes?)

Damn...that's legal now? When I got to my first ship out of SWOS without finding a place to live first, they didn't give me any BAH. Can I get that money back?

The last time I deployed, though, I had all my stuff in storage, no apartment, and kept my BAH. Hmm...come to think of it, I could use a deployment right about now.
