Can anyone tell me if aviators are automatically augmented to the regular Marine Corps or if they must compete for augmentation?

Technically, they all have to compete. Last two Captain boards automatically have augmented all who made the promotion board. MC Times is reporting that this won't be the case next time (not a big deal, just another board looking over your pkg).
