"The complaint filed in federal court in Raleigh contends Parrish was never informed in any enlistment contract or other document "of any requirement or need to 'resign' his Army Reserve commission in order to terminate his status with the U.S. Army Reserves."

I remember when my father retired... he told me about how he could be recalled if they needed him. That was back when the Navy was downsizing in the 90s. How does this guy not know whats going on?

The transfer to the IRR at retirement is a way to increase your pay when you start drawing your retirement. I think it is more prevalent in the reserves where you do not draw the retirement until you are 60? (I think 60 is correct).

After completing 20+ years, you can retire and stop earning retirement points, or retire and transfer to the IRR-which you continue to earn retirement points (which means more pay at 60).
The trade off is that you are subject to recall if you are in the IRR.

I was looking at my first enlistment contract (for some other info) and noticed a separate form I signed stating that I understood that I was subject to recall while in the IRR. It was on a page by itself. I don't see how anyone can say "I didn't realize I could be recalled..." (I haven't read the linked article yet).

Hmm. The above article also mentions that JOs can also apply. I wonder if someone in the Army decided to capitalize on the Navy's dumping JOs lately.

And they're still downsizing the military...

One hand doesn't know what the other is doing, that is for sure!

it is kinda odd to hear about the army's manpower shortages, and then go to work and hear about IRADs and how the Navy has to get rid of 150 pilots.

Navy will pay for it in the future. They always do.

See people, this is why you read the fine print. If you sign something without reading it, get ready to pay the consequences.

Hummmm, hopefully it doesn't get bad enough to turn from "Sunny Vacation A-Pool in Pensacola" into "Sunny Vacation Infantry Lt. in Basra"

Hey, I was just looking up something in the Naval Officer's Guide for a friend who had a question about the Reserve structure. The IRR is considered "active reserve" and are "personnel who are eligible to train (sometimes without pay) as well as earn points toward retirement, and who may be considered for advancement or promotion. These are also the first reservists called to active duty upon mobilization." (NOG, 11th Edition, page 251).
