Area 51, Tomcats vs Migs

The idea of launching from NFL to the FRTC, doing your normal vul there, then flying 200 NM to the Nellis Range for a couple BFM setups, then flying another 200 NM back seems unlikely at best. I know the Tomcat had some legs, but that sounds very far fetched to me, at least based on the info in the story.
 
I'm attending a lecture on Constant Peg at NASM in a couple of weeks.........maybe this will come up.
 
The mission profile is suspect, but fleet pilots were read into the programs, so perhaps something was lost in the edit.
