Enjoyed it. Hard to decipher some of the radio transmissions, especially for non-aviation people that aren’t used to it. My wife wasn’t as jazzed as I was about it.

Yeah, it’s definitely fan service for airplane and space nerds. First Man and Apollo 13 (that movie’s aged really well considering it’s now almost 25 years old) are entertaining movies about Apollo. This flick was an experience.

Just wait for it to come out on Betamax...that’s what I’m doing.

Here is a nice image of early “moon” training site selection, Iceland in this case. The ships are Piasecki H-21’s so they must be USAF. I don’t think the Navy ever used them.

Affirm - Navy flew its smaller brother the HUP-2, as late as 1964.


A bit of trivia - I met Mr. Piasecki many times. His son Fred is a friend and classmate of mine from BU. Later I flew a '46 to the facility of Piasecki Aircraft in Essington, PA near PHL and a stone's throw from Boeing Helicopters.

Mr. Piasecki's daughter Nicole went on to become the President of Boeing Commercial Aircraft and set the strategy that exists today around 737MAX, 787-10 and 777X. Remarkable family. Aviation is a small world.
