API and NFO Primary selection

I am soon to start API and my only concern is the Helo dunker. The reason is because I have a huge problem when water goes up my nose. What are the restrictions when doing this evolution? Would I be allowed to plug my nose when the dunker roles?

Also, I don't really understand how aircraft selection works for NFO's during primary? I heard that primary is about three months and after the three months those that want to go maritime select for it and go to Texas. Is maritime competative? I also heard that if you don't select for maritime you stay in pensacola for advanced and then the next selection comes for E-2's. When does that selection occur? Those that remain select jets. How competative is it for jets? Is my understanding of selection correct? Thanks for any help to clear up my confusion.

I'm not a big fan of water going up my nose either so I wasn't looking forward to the dunker. It really wasn't a big issue. Until the dunker is completely upside down, you can keep your head at an angle to keep the water from going up. When I was upside down, I just blew out my noise constantly. The harness is really easy to get out of and once you are out of it, you are upright.

I thought about holding my nose, but you have to 'brace' yourself for impact. Once you are underwater, there was NO way I was going to let go of that reference point and my harness release. That middle seat sucked. Too bad we didn't get to expierence the older dilbert trainer. I'm sure that was a water-shooting-up-nose machine.

The LEAST of your worries should be about "water going up your nose." You will be far to busy concentrating on what seat your sitting in, what exit you should be going out of and staying away from the inevitable "boot in the face." Relax, take a deep breath and listen to your instructors - you'll be fine.

One thing that I do when upside down under water is push my upper lip over my nostrils so that the nostrils are covered with the portion of the upper lip that is the same color as the rest of your skin. It acts kind of like a blow hole. If you need to clear your nose, you can blow through your nose and then quickly suck a little with your nose to create a good seal.

Some people may not be able to do it and I don't know how well it would work in the dunker but I just figured I would through it out there.

You look like a retard under water but it works for the most part.

timeline for aircraft selection in primary for NFO's

I was wondering what the timeline is for nfo's for aircraft selection during primary? As far as when will you select for P-3's, E-2, or jets and what the time is between those selections. Also, what is competative for NFO's. I heard that it was P-3's, but I'm not sure if that is the case. Thanks for any help.

P-3 selection happens at the end of primary, usually about 3 months after starting. E-2 selection happens at the end of intermediate, usually about 3 months after finishing primary. If you get jets you go to VT-86 and Hornet/Prowler selection is usually about 4-5 months after you start advanced.

It varies from selection to selection. There are people who would have given anything for (insert airframe) but didn't get them, while their buddies wanted anything but (insert airframe) but got it anyway. Lately it's not even uncommon for Navy guys to want Prowlers and get Hornets.

As far as getting E-2's... two selections: You'll have to select TacAir (CVW on the preference sheet) out of Primary and then E-2's (VAW-120 on the preference sheet) out of intermediate.

I was in the dunker at FAA OKC... and got the whole experience for the first time on a more voluntary basis.. and it wasnt so bad to be honest... I came out of it and I swear my sinuses were clear for like 6 months
