I know there are some other threads going about where to live in Corpus...

Does anyone have any good suggestions on which apartments to look at and/or avoid? Also, is it worth the extra cash to live on the island?

I've done some looking around here on the site and elsewhere, but I'm looking for some up to date suggestions.

Thanks!

compass bay

i would have to recommend compass bay apartments. it is a new place and it is very nice. it is a little more expensive than the other places but not much more. the management is real cool and a navy spouse actuallly works in the office. you do not want to live in town. tons of crime and really busy. the island is definately worth the money. it takes me about 8 minutes to get to base in the morning. i can even come home to see my beautiful wife for lunch breaks. also, if you have a wife or girlfriend moving down here with you, tell her that the job market sucks down here so she better start looking now. my wife and I have been here for about 3 weeks and she still doesn't have a job even with a very marketable bachelor's degree. hope that helped.

Thank you for your informative reply. Compass Bay is one of the complexes I have been in contact with and is one of the specific places I hoped to get feedback on. If you don't mind me asking, which floorplan are you in? Also, about how far is the apartment from A&M? My wife has a bachelor's degree but is going back to school to pursue nurse anesthesiology. Feel free to PM me this info.

I've got a friend who just moved into one of the 1 br apartments in Compass Bay, very nice place. I've also got a friend in a 2 br unit there. Its about 10 mins from base, and maybe 15-20 to A&MCC. The drive to A&M is very easy. Although, not to alarm you, someone just stole the wheels and tires off a 'vette in the parking lot last week. But as midhusker said, living on the island is definitely worth it. I've been told to stay away from the Beach Club apartments on the island, and I've also heard nothing good about Bay Pointe, which is close to A&M. Hope this helps.

I'll second everything said... Live on the Island. Stay away from Baypoint on the mainland. I spent my 7 months in town in a one bedroom at Compass Bay and was very happy with it. Great management, one of the closest complexes to the mainland, and the only complex that is walking distance to Farah's. (and the Pelican if you're into old people and karaoke) They also give you something like a 5% military discount on the rent. Take that 5% and use it somehow to insure that you get into VT28. Good luck down there.

Does anyone have any info about Stoneleigh apartments? I know they're pretty new, but just wondering...

Check out Stoneleigh Apartments. It's in town and just opened in February, so there's a ton of vacancy. They are running lots of specials right now (I'm paying $632 for a $725 apartment). The management has been pretty cool so far, no problems anticipated. PM me for more info. It's between Airline and Staples south of the SPID which places you within minutes of everything. Lowe's is about 3 minutes away, so is H.E.B., Starbucks (only one I know of in town), and Krispy Kreme.

Living in town depends on how you want to live. Living in town places you waaaay closer to everything except anyone you might know who lives on the island and the beach. You have to come into town to do nearly everything else.

from someone who had the pleasure of being in VT-27......yes try for 28!

Thankfully all I know is 28, but I'd agree with the above. From what I know 28 is much better.

About the Corvette at Compass Bay that had the tires taken -- it's the first time any kind of theft has occurred at this apartment complex. It is a 2006 Corvette and I hear that the tires on vettes are @ $4000 soooo.....word to the wise: if you have a nice car like that, park it in one of the garages across the street. We've been completely satisfied with Compass Bay. Ample parking and never run out of parking spaces (AND anyone's allowed to park here, should you have visitors). Still recommend the island....crime rate is substantially lower than in town (regardless of the corvette's tires). It's quite and about 70% less traffic than in town. For me, HEB and Walmart are about a 10 minute drive. As far as what layout we got at Compass...I think it's the Nassau. We have an end unit so I think it's bigger. HUGE walk-in closet. Garden tub. Nicely decorated interior. Hope this info helps!

Yeah I wasn't trying to dissuade anyone from living at Compass Bay, very nice layouts. And midhusker is right, crime out on the island is much less than in town.
