Does anyone know when USNA and NROTC stopped letting people select staff corps/restricted line designators if they're qualified for unrestricted line?
 
Been that way for as long as I can remember. There is a seperate Nurse Corps ROTC program for just that reason.

That doesn't tell you why though. Was he restricted from URL? Did he wash-out of a pipeline? Did they not have a slot for him in the URL communities?
 
I think this past year they were allowing some people to select line jobs cause the normal communities were full, but don't quote me on it. Otherwise, its the basic ones always.
 
Yeah, one of the guys at our unit had a SWO billet selected, but had always wanted to go Supply. After ship selection they contacted him, and he got redesignated as a Supply Officer. He's now in Athens, GA or somewhere like that at SUPPO school. So yeah, it is happening now.

I know a guy who went Intel out of ROTC, but that was for several reasons. One, they had more guys than they knew what to do with that fiscal year, '04. Two, he had needed skills (Middle Eastern languages). But other than that, I wouldn't hold my breath. It's rare, but not impossible.

Believe it or not, I actually remember when this happened. It was the 96/96 school year when they stopped letting everyone select RL, it was URL for everyone physically qualified. This is only the latest time that the Navy has required this, I am sure the policy has changed numerous times over the past 50-100 years.

If you want to complain about it though, Academy guys (and I think ROTC too) had to serve their first 2 years of their commision on a ship before doing anything else (like aviation or subs) before WW II. They even had a seperate wardroom on the bigger ships for the 2 year or less Ensigns. Oh yeah, and before that (late 1800's early 1900's?) Academy guys had to serve 2 years as a midshipman after graduating before becoming an Ensign, and it was not a sure thing they would even get a commision :eek: . That rule changed several times too. So as much as life sucks for you now, it could suck a lot worse.

Thanks for the info. In case anyone was wondering, I asked because I'm currently at CECOS, and I have to write a point paper as to whether the CEC should access more officers via lat xfer. Obviously, I'm a little biased being a transfer myself, but one of my arguements for selecting more is because ROTC and USNA guys can't go CEC straight out of school (unless of course they aren't qualified for URL).

I agree w/ this too.....if nothing else, it would probably weed out most of the "I only want a pilot slot/I'll quit if I don't get it" guys. Plus, it seems that being a JO on a smaller ship would give you far better leadership experience in those first 2 years than any training command could hope to provide. However, I have no practical experience to back up this opinion :icon_wink

Worked O.K. in the middle/late '60's ..... you could select whatever you wanted even when qualified for URL, contingent on Needs-of-the-Navy .... gee, hope this helps. :icon_mi_1

While I agree with the sentiment, I have yet to meet one of these cats. I'm sure they're out there, but they aren't quite as frequent as some would lead you to believe. I've heard the bravado, but when it's all said and done, 99% roll with what they've been dealt. If nothing else, trust me they are weeded out by the IP's and studs way before the fleet. That is of course, in my limited experience, I'm sure some slip through.
