i'm not sure how old this thread is, but i saw it and thought i'd shed some light on the topic....
i just recently got my motorcycle lic. this summer and was originally going to pick up a CBR F4i, but the deal fell through, so i bought a 2001 Triumph Speed Four... not to be confused with the new Speed Triple that recently came out, but its a sweet bike, and for 3k, it didnt break the bank... yet!
i have really grown on the "naked" sports bike look, the bike is heavy and not R6 or CBR fast but its great for me, i'm not racing it so its fun to cruise it around, its also my first bike too so that is kind of nice... any idea of what exactly your looking to get? check Ducati, some of their year old bikes are affordable, now that i hav got more into it, i'd love to own either a Buell XB-RR or a Ducati 1098... someday!
