Someone I know (civilian) just got a job offer at the Navy annex on Andros Island. I have done exercises there, but never been to the island. Just wondering if anyone has been to or lived on the island and could give me any impressions, how isolated it is, is it easy to get back and forth to the mainland? Thanks.

Been there numerous times, up to 6 weeks.

Military were confined to base, civ could come and go, but lived on base.

Gooney-Bird runs back and forth to the mainland daily.

Andros Island, is the "ghetto bahamas", I've been off base, and you are not missing much.

Sattelite TV/Internet, normal phone service (cell did not work in 04 & 03).

Nice beaches, and bonefish fishing. Boaters paradise.

Entertainment is mostly drinking heavily. It's the alcoholism captial of the Navy. Not really much else to do..

Oh, and the locals have a 25% HIV rate. And that's just the cases they know of (BYOP)

Echo what MB has said thus far. Been there 6-8 times, although my last visit was in '98. Seems like a tight-knit little group of folks, and if you dig the island lifestyle (i.e. isolated from civilization), it would be fun. I know there's some kind of rotation schedule, so it's not like you're out there for your whole time there. Everyone seems to eat at the chow hall which has great food. Every Wednesday was surf & turf night, and it wasn't the navy galley kind you're used to. I'm talking nice steaks and lobster tails. Transport is by golf cart (driving on the left side of the road), which most people seemed to have there. There are a couple watering holes I know of. One club like venue (1000 fagots club?) and one down on the beach. Bottom line, booze, beach, fishing and easy livin' - I'd work there.
