So, since I know I am going to be home for atleast another year, I want to start looking at jobs that could help with going into the Marines. As much fun as tending a bar can be, it will only get you so far. Im thinking of taking the civil service tests. Opinions? Also, still contemplating doing Marine reserves, although risk of losing OCS shot by being pulled to active worries me. Also, crowbar, or any priors... are there any type of civilian jobs with the military that a college grad can do? -Reaps

Hey I was a cop for five years in Valdosta Ga. for 5 years before joining the Navy, and I served in the Marine reserves for 8yrs also. The pay was'nt that great but I enjoyed the work. As for the civil service tests I recently took the Customs and Border Protection exam in Miami the other day. I too am trying to get a federal job since I only have until may to remain in the Navy. I suggest you check out www.usajobs.opm.gov , and check out the DOD listing on the browser. It is a federal website that has information about various gov't job. And if you decide to go that route apply to as many agencies as you can, because once your're in the fed system you can always transfer to another agency.

Some of the civil service jobs are reserve friendly ie..NCIS, others are not ie..the Secret Service which happens to be hiring right now. So you may want to look into that. But ultimately you must ask yourself what you would be happy doing. And its good to have a back-up plan also in case the Corps does not work out.

I hope I was some help to you and good luck.

Thanks, thats awesome... question though... can you join one of those services and quit? Or is a contract? I mean, what happens if I get a job and get accepted to OCS?

Some agencies on the local level will require you to hang around for a year (or two in my case)to recur some of the cost of sending you through the Academy. I'd check that before making a commitment. Most if not all, will be looking for someone that's going to be around for a few years, especially since you'll be partnered up for the first six months or so.
