I'm sure many here are thinking about life afterwards in the airlines. In case y'all didn't know, USAir went bankrupt about 2 years ago. Their pensions were cut from an expected $96k a year to $28k a year.

Now United has just failed for the 3rd time to get a loan from the US government. It is deep in bankruptcy and must get substantial pay cuts (again) from its pilots as well as most likely losing most or all of their pensions.

Just a heads up - a guaranteed military pension is a beautiful thing.

That's why the Delta pilots are retiring in droves right now - they are trying to get their lump sum before Delta goes bankrupt within a year (estimated). However, your father looks to be in good shape since Northwest is one of the healthier airlines.

If I go for any airline, Southwest would be my only choice. Of course I've got 8.5 years left before retirement so who knows what things will be like then. Southwest has yet to furlough any pilots, ever. Though American Airlines earned me my biggest stock gains/profit last year. That stock alone paid for my daughters school and my wife's car payments.
