In an interview with CNN, Matt Phillips said his father was killed before he could testify in a court-martial trial against Martin.

"He was shamefully kicked out of the military; my father had a lot to do with that," Matt said.

Martin was found guilty of the charges, dismissed from the military and placed under “confinement for 90 days,” according to the records.

In a statement to ABC News, American Airlines officials said Martin passed a routine criminal background check that found "no criminal history that would disqualify him from being a commercial pilot."
