Air Contract Question

Well I am finally in the process of applying for PLC. My OSO is suggesting I go NFO right now, because its easier to get into the program as a freshman, and he said its not too tough to get a waiver then switch from SNFO to SNA once you're in the program. Especially since I've got at least 4 more years of school. What's the word on the PRK waiver and switching?

I'm sorry for bringing this up again, I know its been beaten to death, but I can't find anything on it using the search. Let me just say I have no problem going SNFO, I would just prefer SNA if possible.

Sorry I didn't say this before, but my OSO is suggesting I apply before I get PRK, and then get the procedure and apply for the waiver after I'm in the PLC program. Can I even do this?

Yes, you can according to my oso. Im an NFO applicant for OCC. He told me not to get PRK before you get in... its chancy with regards to NOMI accepting it. That the testing program for PRK is almost over, and if they stop accepting the waiver, youre done. But... if you get the PRK while in the Marines... by their docs, then you should be good to go (if procedure is done before TBS). Now as a PLC'er, you have plenty of time between 1st increment and TBS to get the procedure. So, if your OSO says to go NFO, listen to him, you have time to change stuff around.

Maybe its just me, but, I wouldnt take an NFO slot if I didnt want to be an NFO.

sorry i'm a bit late on this one, just got logged on today, but i had PRK this summer and got my waiver. i'm slotted to go to OCS in jan - there was a 3 mo. eval period but as of sept 25th i've been cleared and good to go - hope this answers some questions. oh, also my oso said he hasnt heard of anyone being rejected for prk

Thanks texag02. I'm not too worried about them waiving the PRK. Its just my OSO is suggesting I go in as an SNFO contract, go to juniors, then get PRK and switch. I've only been in school for a couple weeks now so I've got a good 4 or 5 years before I could even be commissioned. I just wanted to know if there is a decent chance of making the switch from SNFO to SNA in that time.

Damn, I really need to call NOMI tommorrow. Everyone keeps getting PRK and getting waivers. I could have gotten it a year ago. If NOMI tells me to get it, Im def going to. I wouldnt mind being an NFO at all, dont get me wrong. But I love to fly now, I would love to do it as a profession, especially with the Marines.

Sounds like you’re in my position. I don’t want to spend the money and then not get in. I to am also trying to gather the facts.

The question is how hard is it to switch after OCS. Since you have no obligation to the Corps and can just walk away, I’d think the cards would be heavily in your favor. I would MUCH rather get a PRK or better, LASEK after OCS.

The problem with this route for me is that if I can’t make the switch, I’d rather go ground. A switch in and of itself that could be more tricky and not looked favorably on. I figure working in close proximity with aircraft as an NFO would be akin to passing an ex-gf on the street…every day. I’ve been eyeing up three possible MOS’s on ground that I wouldn’t mind getting into. As of now, I’m leaning towards going ground then trying to switch. If I can’t make the switch, owell, that’s life.

I'm not afraid of getting SNFO. I just want SNA more. Heh. SNFO has a lot of benefits, such as they only go to two different platforms. Prowlers and Hornets are great airframes.

What's the word on LASEK and what exactly is it?
