The basis for age 60 was based on health. With the advances in medicine, it would be extremely difficult to make the argument to decrease the retirement age.

Age 65 was bound to happen. But the FAA should have been allowed to control the process, do the medical studies to verify no detriment to safety, and to plan a phase-in that would alleviate the many issues and problems associated with the change. A controlled phase-in would not have pissed off pilots as bad as this abrupt change.

There are a lot of politics and background that you have no clue about. If you did, you would not be asking about a change to 55.

And that answered my question perfectly. Thanks.

Here is an interesting article on the upcoming and apparently growing pilot shortage.......http://www.newsweek.com/id/78116
There are tons of qualified airline pilots without jobs. The problem isn't a shortage of pilots, it is the shortage of reasonable pay and benefits associated with the jobs that are open. So the truly qualified pilots are selling houses or back on active duty. If they pay goes up, the pool of furloughed pilots out there will take those jobs.

Changing the rules in the airline game. Who'd have thunk it? Back when I started my Odyssey Future Airline Pilots Association,or FAPA, was the gouge. I was assured the WWII and Korean War pilots would be retiring and there was an impending pilot shortage; Lois Smith and Kit Darby were sure of it. Their guidance went something like this. Get a seniority number with a carrier such as Braniff, Eastern, TWA or Pan Am because even if you get furloughed you'll be recalled eventually;not to worry the pay and retirement of the Uniteds,Deltas and USAirs would make the inevitable lean years all worthwhile. One thing you knew for sure the financial stability of the likes of Continental, Northwest and American could not be questioned. You might even consider whoring yourself out to Midwest Air Charter, Federal Express , one of the UPS carriers or that little airline down in Texas run by some eccentric lawyer so that you could make yourself more attractive to the legacies. Unless you were over 30, then you were screwed.
