Whats going on? I have been reading the boards for a couple of months now but never really posted. I have a couple questions. I will be a junior next fall at the Univ. Of Oklahoma and I am a member of the Naval ROTC unit here as well. I am majoring in Aviation. My question is this : I should have about 150 hours of flight time in the event I get selected for flight training. Assuming I do, will I have that great of an advantage over the average Joe? considering I can already take off, fly, navigate thru VOR's and NDB's, shoot approaches, have a commercial license with instrument ratings etc etc..? I hear I may at API but at Primary it all even steven. Secondly, would people consider Aviation a technical major?? I mean I take Calc I and II engineering as well as both engine Physics, so why not?? and Third, are there any other training journals than John Wickhams and Steve Wilkins floating around?? Any answers and info would be appreciated. Plus this site is an awesome idea and it provides valuable information.

I am sorry you feel that way. I do not think the word "Jap" is a racist remark. There are however racist remarks for people of Oriental ethnicity, and it is my understanding "Jap" is not one of them...it is like calling an Oklahoman an "OKIE"...take it easy and try not to be thin skinned. Besides as a "future naval officer" there are many a' time I heard one of the greatest "Naval Officers" ADM. Bull Halsey use the word "Jap" in documentaries. It is not a racial connotation in my mind. Sorry you feel this way.

Trap3wire...

Yes, the Bull was very vocal when it came to his disdain of the Japanese. One quote I distinctly remember is: "When this war is over the Japanese language will be spoken only in Hell." Now I'm as big a fan as the Admiral who use to call BB-62 home as anyone but what he's hinting at there is nothing less than Genocide. That sentiment was acceptable in 1942 but not today. The word you need to learn to work in today military is "sensitivity". What you don't think is offensive a lot of other poeple may and that's all.

I agree with Mari. That was a racist remark and I was quite surprised by it on this forum. I absolutely believe in freedom of speech but you have to remember you are going to become a Naval Officer. You will work alongside people of every nationality on earth, and it is imperitive that you understand that some people may be offended by phrases like "Damn Japs". I have friends of different nationalities who rib me for be a "drunk Mick" and I do the same back but this is all in good fun. We know each other and know the line but a forum like this is not the place for those ethnic slurs. Also know that Mari and I are writing this to help you not just to berate you. O.k there's my post for the month. Later.

I agree with Mari and Mcaf. In my opinion Trap you have a lot to learn before you become a Naval Officer and set foot in Naval aircraft; and it goes beyond knowing how to fly a plane. First lesson, try not to alienate yourself right from the get go.

We could sit around and debate whether the word "Jap" is racist all day long. The fact is the quote from his grandfather is completely irrelevant to anything on this board and there was no point in writing it in the first place. However, I don't get the impression that trap3wire is a racist for writing it. The comment was in bad taste but I think people are overeacting here by making a character judgement on somebody they have never met.

I agree with pdt. Relax, as naval officers you will hear worse things than what trap wrote. He used bad taste in posting that remark. However, I think that there may be some deeper emoitons running around here. If you allow traps remarks to get you all riled up, you are in for one heck of a career in the military. Take it all with a grain of salt. Mari, I understand where your coming from but sometimes you got to turn the other cheek. Smile Damnit!!

I would like to apologize to whoever I may have offended. It was totally in good nature and not meant to be offensive. I too, am a "minority" in a sense...being half Iranian and half Irish so I guess in my life time I learned to just have a good sense of humor and not let small things get to me, my mistake in assuming it is the same for everyone. That said, obviously I was just asking a few questions pertaining to my quest for knowledge in the aviation community to further prepare myself for what is to come. I would like to get this topic back on track and any info would be appreciated. After all, I would hope that after the events that has happened to our country in the last few months...I hope we have learned it is not worth it to be so uptight and let petty things bother us we have much more to worry about. Anyone on here can tell you that it was not meant to harm anyone and if I wanted to be offended why aren't I angry at the derogatory Middle Eastern remarks? I have heard instancesin this forum like "bombing Turbin Land"..etc etc...but hey I see the humor in it and know that there are worse things in life to be angry at. Once again sorry, and I would like to apologize to concerned parties.

P.S. I attend the University of Oklahoma to whoever asked.

"My grandfather's frequent insulting references to the personal qualities of the Japanese enemy were in accord with the conventions of the time, although when I read them today I wince at their racist overtones. I don't believe they were intended as racist screeds. But war, which occasions much heroism and nobility, also has its corruptions. That's what makes it so terrible, a thing worth avoiding if possible."
