Accommodation Period

I'm trying to get out of my lease at Governors Gate, and was wondering if anyone knows what an Accommodation Period is? I moved in October of 2006 so my understanding is on a 12 month lease it should end the end of September 2007 right? Well my lease says that plus an accommodation period of 30 days. Does anyone know what that is? I'm thinking it is someting like a grace period before they raise your rent and/or move your lease to month to month.

Thanks for the info in advance.

Is it maybe just a stupid way to say that you need to inform them 30 days in advance that you're moving out?

So is that legally binding on my part, IE if I want to go before that 30 period is up then I can, or I can choose to stay? I have already given them notice.

I'm not sure about Governor's Gate but when my roommate who dealt with our old management company forgot to give them 30 days notice, we ended up having to pay for another month's rent even though we had moved out already.

If you have already given them notice they most likely have already arranged a new tenant to move in when your slated to move out. My roommate when thru this when he divorced. When they split he gave the leasing office his notice. Two days later his ex decided she wanted to stay in the apt. When they talked to the office, the office pretty much said she was out of luck and that they had already found someone to move in.

I've already given them notice but they are telling me my lease isn't up until the end of October which would make it 13 months, that's why I'm trying to figure out what this accommodation period is. Here is the exact wording in the lease.

"This lease is for a term of 12 months, plus an accommodation period of 30 days, commencing on the 2nd day of October 2006 and ending on the last calender day of October 2007."

I believe it was explained to me that the 30 days was the notice as said above, I'm just trying to go into the office tomorrow with my ducks in a row. And I appreciate all the help.

EDIT: Just went into the office and basically they couldn't tell me what this accommodation period is either. But from what it sounds like they seem to think that it means that since I moved in on the 2nd of October I have to stay an additional month but if I had moved in on the 1st I would be able to get out 12 months later as opposed to 13. But, they didn't really even know what it was. Does anyone else on the forum who rents/leases have the term of the lease worded in this way?
