I've gathered that there are several options for Naval Aviators after completing their first tour in a squadron.

Can someone describe the process for selecting a second tour? Who has input on this decision and what is most significant in determining the assignment? Does this vary quite a bit from one airframe to the next? How much input will you have (and will the Marines ever put you somewhere that you request?)

PS - I scanned several threads for this info - sorry if it has been posted in another thread already.

Thanks for the link. It seems that most of that info is related to MOS selection.

How does the Marine Corps decide which option (FAC, Instructor, AW School, etc.) will be your next tour if you are a Naval Aviator? Is it mostly decided by your commanding officer? Do they ask for your feedback?

It's a bit of everything, with the "Needs of Service" being #1.

Some of the factors - in no particular order - are your wants and desires (as noted on your FitReps & conversations with your monitor), your CO's guidance, your natural career progression (certain OccFields have "standard" career progressions that are basically required in order to move up in rank/responsibility), input from your Monitor (every OccField has any number of "monitors," who are Marines from your field who track the numbers of Marines needed for different assignments. "No better friend, no worse enemy..."), your performance in your MOS, your performance as a Marine, and usually just luck/timing. Depending on needs of service and how badly you have pissed off your monitor, you will most likely have a handful of choices for life after your first tour. Some may be awesome, and others may be picking the lesser of the three evils.

However, no matter what your wants/desires/needs/etc., a wise LtCol once told me, no matter what you get, "They are orders - not invitations."

Congratulations on the OCC gig. Don't worry about second tours yet - just get through OCS first!

Thanks for the answer. I know it is a bit early to worry about that now, but my curiosity got the better of me after I started to read about the different options.
