I basically followed the list (basic toiletries, my business casual civvies, shower shoes, white socks, laundry pods). I would recommend having your CAC and also any med documents on hand. Also a pillow and a blanket if you are particular about your sleep. I'm a dude, so if any ladies happen to read this, just be aware mmv. Me and a nurse corp member checked in at the same time, I had only a carry on and a backpack, and she had two big lugagge bags which I helped her carry to the fifth floor of King Hall. Bring snacks if you are a picky eater (a lot of people complained about the food at Ney Hall, I was ambivalent), they are to never leave your locker. Bring cold medicine, sickness goes around pretty quickly at ODS.
I would recommend getting a good shoe polish and rough rag, the shoe polish available at the uniform store isn't the best, the NEX has some but you can't even go there until second weekend. We had polishing parties in my wing at least once a week where we were quizzing each other on the
knowledge book. Cotton balls help with the polishing too, I ordered some off Amazon and had them shipped to OTCN (I believe we were allowed to get packages as early as the end of the first week). Everything else is pretty much available at Davy Jones's locker. I would recommend getting there Saturday if you can swing it, to get first dibs on stuff. The stuff from there I would get would be an iron, ironing board, wooden clipboard, a wooden or metal ruler. Ultimately, our wing had a communal ironing board and like three irons floating around all from Davy Jones. There's also plenty of hangers for the eventual uniforms (more on that below). Depending on the time of year, you can also grab a desk fan from there. I went right as the winter weather was leaving (only saw light snow once) so it wasn't an issue for me.
On to uniforms. Before I went to ODS I was incredibly anxious about dropping a bunch of cash for uniforms at ODS and from what I read online, it was cheaper to go to a thrift store to snag up uniforms. Unfortunately for me there were none near by and it was hard to plan a trip to SD. I only had three pairs of PTUs, my NWUs, black boots, and black liner that I purchased prior since I had been drilling since Oct '24. (Blouse from NEX online with my name tape, and two trousers from Ebay with no name tape) and ONE khaki top that I bought on the cheap. Long story short, I decided it was just easier to buy everything at ODS. Logisitcally easier although not cheaper, but getting the right size was critical for me. When they inspected our NWUs, they deemed my trousers too faded and long. As far as the shortages, they were aware but did have limited stock so we were only allowed to purchase ONE pair of NWUs so I bought trousers that were actually my size and those are the only ones I have worn from that point forward. You will need to purchase stuff that you will only need while you are there but that's just how it goes unfortunately. They also offer gift cards good for up to like 2500 that you need to pay off by the end of ODS. I did that, and then applied for the Military Star card because it gives you a 10% discount on all of that stuff and your first bill isn't until you leave ODS. They make it very easy to enroll in it. I would say that you may want to purchase an extra beanie cover since things do tend to get mixed up during morning PT. I think I covered everything. Overall, I had a pleasant time there. If I think of anything else I will update here
