Worst duty stations

No Marines yelling about Al Asad, Iraq? Marines love to tell you how much they love it when life sucks. Maybe not the worst, but even 5 months into cruise, I really missed the ship.

Say what?
We had to divert for a jet issue and ended up spending a few days in the gracious company of VMFA-224. When you are on the ship you can't wait to get off...when you are expected back and you don't make it, you have some 'splaining to do.

Boys, Girls, Children ... please .... the winner ---hands down --- is:

Shemya Island ... a.k.a. Shemya AFB, a.k.a. Eareckson Air Station. I spent 5 very long days there with a sick 747 waiting for parts after an emergency divert.

There is no comparable "worst duty station" ... :) ... they just don't exist.

This true, having been to Shemya more than once over the years, but a "close" second is Thule AFB Greenland. It's pretty bad when the high for the day is -60...:(

I was sick of Pensacola and ready to leave, until I arrived at Corpus...wished I was back in Pensacola. I hated Corpus until I arrived in Kingsville...wished I was back in Corpus...

PSAB, now that was a sh#$hole.....

PSAB was pretty sweet compared to other sh!tholes in the sand..places like Thumraite Oman. At least in PSAB there were hard billets, swimming pools, couple gyms and icecream.

Al Asad sucked, but so did Liberia and Djibouti. I wouldn't call those "duty stations", but "deployment locations."

Looking back, my worst duty station is Camp Lejeune/New River. I was a single guy, so I was importing women in from the DC area. My wife lives in Odenton, MD (doing the geo bachelor thing until I get out), so that's why I have an 8 month old car with 22,000 miles on it.

Omaha, Nebraska...gotcha all beat! Offutt AFB has joint commands there. Usually the AFBs are great, this one sucked, and Omaha... do I even need to elaborate?

Nublett, if you ever get some time to get away, head up I-29 to Lake Okoboji in Iowa...heard Playboy rated it in the top 3 places to go on the 4th of July a couple years back...I graduated in 04, was the place we all went--don't have to look around much to get hooked up with a boat, people to hang with, and drinks...

Brandon, know anybody stationed at Lake Okoboji, Iowa? I thought this was about horrible duty stations? Besides, I can't believe you actually read Playboy! :icon_tong

A4s, 5 days? I thought we were discussing permanent-type duty stations. In that case... Resolution Island! It is a 2000' frozen landing strip with cliffs at both ends, surrounded by ocean and icebergs. The place is completely barren. All the "buildings" are old metal trailers. You have to take a snow machine just to get out to the plane.

5 days?? Of course ... I was an officer and a gentleman, flyin' a Boeing 747 ... and a civilian. Not an animal in the military. And of course, those five days included having to "protect" 14 flight attendants from the "elements". :)

Or .... another viewpoint .... for all you P-3 drivers ... we went by Diego Garcia in 1974 ... the guys stationed there THEN wanted to come out to the ship for ice cream and a "real" shower. And white sheets on the racks .... :) ... it's all relative.

Nublett, ya got me...Just tryin' to save you from the mundane over at Offutt AFB--figure it's gotta be either drive up to 'Boji, or down to KC for something to do around there...It's home to me, and I love it, but weekends could be pretty slow...

Brandon, I haven't been at Offutt for years, thank heavens! Trust me, while I was there I explored as far as I could. Did you know that it takes an entire day's drive away from Omaha before the vista is nolonger dominated by corn fields.

PSAB, now that was a sh#$hole.....

Oh yeah, and to the guy who thinks that Kadena is the worst place around, there is something seriously wrong with you.....wait to you sit on a ramp in 130 degree weather surrounded by the worlds largest sandpit, then you know a sh$%hole...........:icon_smil

Oh I hated PSAB with a passion, spent a lot of time there in 1999 with VAQ-142.?
