Just know that POV runs aren't a guaranteed thing so make sure you have everything you might need in that lucky bag.

Well how do they handle breakable items like laptops? Or are laptops just one of those things you should keep in your car and hope you get a POV run and if not make do without?

If you think you're gonna check in or get a POV run and grab your laptop, you are high on that good stuff.

Leave your laptop in your car until candio phase....technically you're not permitted to have it unless given permission by the class team/class officer. I had mine but handled the Hi Moms slideshow so I was able to have mine. There is no internet, but it was nice to listen to my music again and go to starbucks on base and use the internet when I had the time during candio phase.

6) GOOD BOOT SOCKS: Fox River or Thorlo boot socks will save your feet. My boot that I was issued suck and almost everyone's hurt their feet in one way or the other because you're on your feet for 16 hours a day (at least).

Black, yes?

Granted I have an awesome MacBook Pro, but I left it in my car from Oct-Dec until we went on leave and it worked just fine. I had it in my back of my trailblazer along with some other stuff in bags, all covered up by a blanket to keep out of sight. The seawall lot (if that's where they're still parking) is fairly remote, and it's on a military base so security is good. I wouldn't be concerned keeping stuff in my car.

Thanks for the gouge. I misunderstood how laptop privileges were handled, so it'll just stay in my car.

I would suggest a smartphone. I picked up a droid X before going to OCS in preparation for Candio phase. It has already paid out big time, and I still have a few weeks to go till that point. Pretty much, I was granted Emergency Leave for a weekend, and it really helped to get my affairs in order at the last minute, being able to browse ticket prices, weather conditions, and call all from the same phone. Then there was using it while waiting for my car ride up to Providence after being granted holiday leave. Pretty much, it's been amazing the few times I've been able to use it, and it'll prove very useful once I become a Candio. Would highly suggest it.

Also, ignore the OCS website when it says to bring a whole bunch of white t-shirts. That hasn't been updated since the move to NWUs, which require blue undershirts. The white t-shirts are only used with the khakis, which you won't be wearing till long after you can detail over to the NEX. I've shredded mine up to either be shoe polishing rags (which they're quite good as), or high-dusting rags, or general cleaning rags.

Bring a lot of socks. Best to have too many than not enough. Same with underwear. That stuff can get quite nasty, especially in your first week. On that same line of thought, buy more blue t-shirts and boot socks from the NEX/uniform shop when you have the chance during your training.

Spray starch is good. They'll make you put it in your lucky bag, and there's a chance your class team won't allow it for some inspections, but if/when you need it you'll be happy you have your own stash one lucky bag run away. Just don't be a jerk and make sure to share with your hatch mate at the very least.

For t-shirts - if able, get the Costco "Kirkland" brand of t-shirts, one size smaller than you usually wear. These are the best white tshirts i've ever owned and wish I had them in OCS. Not that i wear khakis more than once a year or so anymore, but they sure were nice when I had to wear khakis more often.

They're cheap too.

Hanes ComfortSoft are pretty nice too if you can find them on sale. The T-shirts they issue at OCS are pretty much made out of kleenex or something. Worst white T-shirts I've ever worn.

I'd suggest bringing/buying extra of the things you'll need for RLP. I bought a few extra blue NWU undershirts, and quite a few extra pairs of boot socks. The NWU undershirts haven't really panned out too much, but it's nice to always have a clean pair of boot socks in the morning. Also, bring a bunch of extra skivvies and athletic socks. You'll have to go about a week and a half to two weeks after you arrive before you're able to wash any of those, and those are things you'd like to have clean pairs of. Just because you're a nasty indoc doesn't mean you have to be *that* nasty.

On that note, keep a nasty pair of PT gear to wear for PT, and a "clean" pair to wear in the evenings (for sweepers and sleeping in). Not so easy though when half of your sweats are off limits cause you want to keep them nice for RLP, but you do what you can.

I nuked it a bit and bought 9 extra pairs of the ones they sell at the uniform shop. They not that expensive, and for me they do well enough. Some people have problems with the boots and socks and all that, but your feet will be destroyed no matter what after the first week of standing for 12 or so hours a day.

So yeah, I went overkill, but I have clean boot socks every day, so I consider it a win.
