What NRC considers competitive

Judge Q

It's unanimously considered among the very top even without the private school brownie points. But then say some other guy graduated from Western Michigan University with a 3.4. Does the WMU guy have a better shot?

You talkin' smack bout Western Mich? :D

Does the university have anything to do with anything? Like say one guy graduated from Berkeley in mechanical engineering with a 3.3 and is applying for CEC, and everyone knows the educational standard and competitiveness Berkeley is at is through the roof. It's unanimously considered among the very top even without the private school brownie points. But then say some other guy graduated from Western Michigan University with a 3.4. Does the WMU guy have a better shot?

I am curious because I know VT well enough and lots of Hokies to know it's one of the best and most competitive engineering schools one can go to. My corporation (and many others) heavily recruits from there for that reason.

When you are talking about boards that take a hard look at transcripts I do believe it has an affect, I had a person that had graduated from Harvard, I believe and his GPA was just over 3.0 at the same board I had a person who earned their degree from University of Phoenix and had a 3.5 they went for SWO and the person from Harvard rec'd a "N" the U of P rec'd a "Y"

Maybe they wanted to spare the Harvard guy having to be a SWO?

maybe, he also put in for Supply and was turned down. Unfortunately this was before you had to have a physical before submitting, during the physical part a previous injury ended up getting him PDQ'd

No sir. :D I was speaking with a buddy from Michigan earlier and for some reason it was the first thing that popped into my head when thinking of a college that isn't Berkeley.

Hmm very interesting. You're most likely correct. Maybe they didn't care about transcripts for that board or it was as you said the physical coming after submitting.

I'm not familiar with all the Navy memes, but ever since lurking on and then joining this forum, I can't help but get the feeling that the SWO community is the place to avoid. Poor folks :(

for designators like CEC and nuke they take a hard look at transcripts, for SWO for instance they go fast so they may not pay much attention to the school, the boards don't know about medical issue, he ended up getting PDQ after the results came out.

I’m in a similar position; hoping a high GPA will offset a lower OAR. From what I’ve seen on PERS-472, we’re both splitters.

GPA: 3.9
OAR: 60
Choices: Intel, SWO

Anyone know how we look?

I was recently PROREC-Y Intel with a 63 / 3.88. From what I’ve gathered insofar, a few points in either direction on your OAR don’t make too much of a difference. You’ve got a great GPA. Focus on your package, and beefing it up with strong write ups from influential Officers in the community you’re applying for.

Does anyone know if its possible to submit multiple kits? Such as for OCS and DCO at the same time? Anyone here did this before?

I'm putting together my application now and it has some highs and lows. Trying to see if they can counterbalance one another.

Applying: NFO
GPA: 2.9, Physics Major
ASTB: 67 8/7/7
LORs: Ret. Marine General, Current Supervisor who is a Captain in the Army Guard. 3rd LOR pending.
Waivers: Legal. I was drinking underage and had a Fake ID (18yo, 6.5 years ago). Record has been expunged.
Vision: 20/60

OR and I are working on gathering all the material on my citations. I've given him a PDF of the citation, my written account, a background check from when the records were visible, receipt of community service, and the expungement order. Both were misdemeanors. It's a weird situation because no official docs exist that prove the crime happened, but I was unaware the record was expunged so I disclosed it to my OR. Also my lawyer said even though it was expunged, it should always be disclosed to gov't.

There is no such thing as "expunged" or "sealed" when it concerns the federal gov't, or companies that deal with the federal gov't, all that "expunged" means is that the courts cannot disclose to that information to normal people or companies.

aviation doesn't care about LOR's, they are pieces of paper that just get pushed to the side.

Hi everyone, I was hoping to get an idea of how competitive my packet is. I've completed my application submission on 4/13/18 for the 5/18/18 Supply Board.

OAR: 50
ASTB: 4/5/6
GPA: 3.17

I graduated with Supply and Logistics Management (SLM) degree from Portland State University (PSU). My PSU GPA was a 3.53, however, during my associates degree from Portland Community College I received a 2.95 GPA so overall I ended with a 3.17.

I have LORs from a current Supply Officer (LT), a retired Admiral (CO of NAS Miramar), Dean of the PSU SLM program, and some from current and previous employers. Really hoping that I'm accepted although my GPA and OAR could be better.

Were you able to find this thread in searching through the board? https://www.airwarriors.com/community/index.php?threads/the-average-ocs-supply-applicant.45295/

Both your GPA and OAR are below average for those selected (~3.5 and 55), although your degree is up the alley for what they're expecting. LORs look like they come from a good place as long as they have some impactful things to say about you. Any leadership positions or community involvement worth mentioning? The supply community likes to consider the whole person so they may be able to overlook your GPA and OAR if the rest of your application is good. Good luck to you!

I did find that thread awhile ago and the information on the excel spreadsheet was definitely very insightful, thank you. It seemed like there was a mix of people that were selected with similar scores/gpa or even a couple that had lower, but the average does look higher thank what my application will have this time around.

I probably should've expanded a little more in my original post. In my work experiences I've held supervisor/mentor positions as well as training positions for new employees. Outside of work experience I played a high level of hockey where I was the captain of my team for multiple years. After playing hockey I began to coach a team as well as give individual and small group lessons. I'm not sure if that is the kind of leadership/mentorship that the selection board thinks highly of though as most of hockey players were kids between the age of 5-15. Do you know if the selection board looks at each individual transcript or just your overall GPA? Thank you
