Sounds like KNUW...

Actually, more like Seattle. Anytime you landfill an area like that the ground is less stable and if you have a really strong earthquake it can turn into mush essentially and sink.

Gee, that would be a shame...
Hey. There are some sane people here. Not many anymore, but some. :p

Hope my office is built on bedrock; I have no idea. But we do have little lights in the elevators that say “seismic,” so I guess there’s that.

Everything west of I-5 between Denny and Harbor Island is reclaimed land. Also, there's about 1000 feet of fine grained glacial till covering the bedrock in most spots of Puget Sound. The chances of you being on bedrock are pretty slim.

Here’s a pretty cool video demonstrating the concept of liquefaction. The hand gestures are a nice touch.

Now you've got me looking for maps; I'm legitimately curious. I thought Pioneer Square was where the original settlement was before they'd had a chance to start moving things around. I work a few blocks up from that, but prior to Pike Place Market (OPSEC, schmOPSEC; there's like five major companies in that stretch :D )

I do know there used to be a cliff somewhere downtown that got backfilled into a hill. Hence the Underground tours and so forth.

Edit: Well, huh. An convenient ArcGIS application. That's interesting. Looks like my office is fine from other than the general post-earthquake mayhem . . . at least according to the City of Seattle. Adjust tinfoil hats accordingly.

Are you afraid someone is going to visit you at your place of employment?
No, just that some random lurker might be someone in my second-degree-or further military circle going "Dood! Don't highlight yourself because terrorists and identity thieves!" And I'd have to waste time going "I'm not that important . . ."

If I was honestly concerned, I wouldn't have posted anything . . .

China will win the long game, because they can. They have the willpower (across all levers of national power) to do what is neccessary to take what they want now, and wait 50+ years til everyone who remembers it is dead.

The communist party has the will to do what it takes to stay in power but is in no way a sure bet like you describe. Demographics are not necessarily on their side, nor the need to maintain hefty growth to keep the middle class happy. The government there has been doing its best to thread the needle between capitalism and communism. Problem is - no matter how hard they try to maintain growth - a recession will occur, just as we will have a recession at some point. It is the nature of the economy. What happens when you have an autocratic government with a bunch of middle class starving in the streets - a big group hug or blood in the street?

Concur. Which is why they are addressing 2 resource needs with 1 strategy: Acquire huge areas of ocean that happen to be rich in both hydrocarbons and seafood. Feed your people fish, warm their homes with nat gas, and fuel their cars. And coerce/ bully/ fight/ tax (shipping)/ or ignore those who oppose you.
