USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

Making Recruiting Great Again
And when an aviator brought up this issue, he/she got gang-tackled by all the SWOs. As if the fact they make you display your rank over there wasn't already a strong enough incentive to just lurk and not post anything.

I would argue SailorBob isn't a total reflection of the SWO community. Talking to junior and senior SWOs outside of that page, they too agree now is NOT the time to speculate what happened and/or who's at fault. Bigger picture, many SWOs are not too fond of the page either and believe it's a channel for O-4s and O-5s (probably the majority of the population) to network, establish dominance on one another like male dogs, and kiss a** and make it to the next paygrade.

At the same time, I'm sure there are aviators and even other non-SWOs going to Facebook and other social media channels dissecting their own claims as to what happened that night. I'm sure that sort of unprofessional behavior isn't a reflection of their respective community.

In the end, I hope all 7 Sailors are found alive and in due time find out the root cause/s of what caused that incident.

Certainly not commenting on SWO culture, just website culture.

And now I have that scene from The Rundown in my head where Dwayne Johnson's character is hanging upside down getting face-humped by a monkey, and Seann William Scott's character is yelling "establish dominance! Establish dominance!"

Another point worth considering: the SWO community, fortunately for them, doesn't have as much experience with crash, burn, loss, and death. Yes, of course, they've had catastrophic mishaps, but the frequency with which they experience them is WAY less than the aviation community. This isn't some sort of badge of courage so don't even bother with it@azguy - it's just an objective fact. With that being said, is it much wonder that their (USNI sponsored BTW) message board looks the like wives sewing circle discussing the bases's latest gossip?

fuck, that sucks.

I don't now how ships collide, I just don't get it. But I'm not a ship driver and will never be - I don't know the ins and outs maritime navigation.

But this fucking sucks.

NMCRS and USO Yokosuka are taking donations, if you are so inclined.

Rumor is that some sailors walked off the boat with literally nothing but the clothes on their backs. It's seems paltry in light of everything, but it's one small thing that might help.

In one of the briefs that was given they said the CO's cabin was completely destroyed and he was lucky to have survived, the more information they give I am surprised yet relieved that there were not more casualties, to be woken up by a crash and flooding where you are sleeping at 2 am something in the morning and then trying to get out of there so you can do what you need to in order to save the ship while knowing your friends are missing/trapped. I wonder how many civilians realize or understand that the ship was saved by many 22 year old men and women, I doubt many civilians can comprehend that people that age can perform like that, the abilities of our sailors continues to amaze me.

We literally start training for this exact scenario in boot camp (at least when I went through in 2004) with an all night capstone evolution (Battle Stations) that starts in your barracks and ends with you getting your Navy ball cap.

It involved DC, rescue, firefighting, abandon ship, ship's defense, and a lot of running. It pays off down the road.

What shouldn't be lost in all of this is the fact that the Fitzgerald's crew, with no warning, went straight into the worst D.C. scenario you could create, with multiple berthing areas flooding out, a crew all asleep, and the CO immediately out of the fight.

They performed admirably, saving the ship, saving lives, and more than likely some of those seven died doing this.

I'm immensely saddened by this event, but just as proud of those who stopped it from being so much worse.

Might be a bit early, but I wouldn't be surprised if this incident serves as the bedrock for future DC training both in Boot Camp and in the Fleet, much like the USS COLE was . . .

Back in the day, after a ship passed CPA, even if it wasn't a close one, the CIC watch officer ALWAYS said, "watch contact XX". That tells the radar operator and team to keep an eye on the contact just in case it changes course and becomes an issue again. It will be interesting to see why the container ship made a UTurn, and why the US Navy Warship didn't change course to avoid it. ...I'm not insinuating that Navy Ship was legally the "give way" vessel. Lot's of interviews are probably going on now. An interesting radar track.

A ship like a cruiser or destroyer can go back with a quickness. Crp is an amazing thing. When it comes down to it all collisions in 2d only allow for three options. Turn. Speed up. Slow down. To not make that decision easily is want on the crew.
