USMC Cobras

I've heard of people making the switch at various points of flight school, but afterwards? Never heard of it happening in recent times. I say recent, because I've heard of it happening on the jet side back in the '70s, but never in my experience.

The Marine Corps parochialisms start to be a problem. It's one thing to do TBS as a j.g. turned 1stLt, but the longer one waits, the less likely that'll fly. Also, keep in mind that if it could happen, they definitely wouldn't promise Cobras.

There's also the problem of the Navy letting you go...

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I am a Air Force 1Lt flying the HH-60G. I know we have had several Navy 60 pilots cross train into the AF, but I have only heard of one of our own going to another branch (Army 160th). Either way, I appreciate the info.

The other services don't have nearly the same hang-ups as the Corps with accepting transfers. I've seen Marines go USAF, USCG, USNR, and USA. I've only met one USN to USMC transfer, and that was it. She switched right after flight school.

I will be selecting in about 6- 8 weeks, currently everyone who wants Cobras gets them! Kind of crazy, the number one pick for Marines is the Yankee model Huey. 2 weeks ago "word" was passed down warning us that there is going to be a huge 53 draft for a few months. A couple of motivators were really sweating it because they only want to fly Snakes. When you select you have the option of picking Zulus and Whiskeys.... so that is 2 slots for Cobras, then East or West,..... so 4 slots for cobras. I think the going rate for Cobra selection is 30% of all Marines get Cobras. Again, that might just be bad gouge. Everyone I know that wanted Cobras over the past 5 months have received Cobras. Even a few guys got Cobras for there 4th choice......Quality spread!

Had one in my last squadron. Same deal - winged as an Ensign, then paid out the wazoo for some new uniforms and spent the next six months patrolling Camp Barrett as a 7561. This was a few years ago when the Corps was taking all comers.*

*Not to be confused with "Turn of the Century Take On All Comers Griffin."

So let me get this straight. For helo selections, you rank what you want based on the airframe, model, and coast? So a hypothetical selection list could look like...1. UH-1Y West, UH-1 Y East, UH-1 N West, UH-1 N East, etc? So if you really want to fly Hueys, you can put them 1-4 on your list?

I'm pretty sure there's no more UH-1N West selections... But yes, that is how our selection card is. When I selected a while back, there were 10 choices and we had to put them all on our card, in order of our preferences.

Currently selection choices (as of a few months ago) are: UH-1Y West/East; AH-1Z West; AH-1W West/East; CH-53E West/East/Hawaii; CH-46 Pendleton/Okinawa

The last few classes have been heavy on shitters.

Are they sending Echos to HI now? I thought they were getting Ospreys as they phased out the Ds. But my info may be dated.

Not sure about the Osprey. The most recent plan was to send Echos to replace the Deltas, a guy in my winging class was the first guy to actually select 53E's Hawaii.

The plan calls for a skid squadron to head out there too, but we will see...
