One of my favorite things about Air Warriors is when any discussion about fast-mover tactical air is entered by any person who is not a pointy-nose driver we are told to STFU...because we don't know what we're talking about...BUT...that is not as good as when one is an expert at something else and they still tell us to STFU because we aren't one of them!

I might be a clown...even a fucking one...but I have seen more ground combat then you will ever see.

Dude you just might want to consider the company with which you are discussing this topic. Many of the Marines here have done FAC tours in conventional battalions and SOF units. That last sentence isn’t a unique trait to you. Secondly, it does not eminently qualify you as an expert. I know plenty of grunts and SOF personnel alike that couldn’t lead themselves or fruit loops out of a wet paper bag with or without a weapon.

I absolutely, 100% agree that training is the issue. So tell me, because I don't know, once you've flown your 15 to 25 hours a month, added in the mission briefings and such, completed your squadron duty job, finished evaluating and counseling enlisted folk, finished your physical training, and are all caught up on your online "awareness training," how much time is left for the firing line?

These are things done during predeoyment work ups and reiterated during said deployment. In addition to the fact that during dirt dets, carrying an M9, M4, or M16A4 around was the normal for most Marines and I assume most soldiers. If I was going downtown over Indian country as regularly as Navy and Marine TACAIR guys were as of late, You’d be sure as shit I’d be interested in the status of my weapon like @Treetop Flyer does.

So, when was the last time you did land nav with a rifle?
When was the last time you ran 100 yards or more with a rifle and 120 rounds of ammunition? Oh...and then fired that rifle hitting a target?
When is the last time you tried to fire a rifle, with any success, with one hand?
How often have you fired an M4 with the stock collapsed?

This is all about training and you can also answer my other question to @Hotdogs if you'd like. They are all easy questions to answer.

As for the last point, I have said all along it MIGHT give a misplaced feeling of invincibility to a downed airman. If you are smarter than that then rock on. Look, I don't care if you carry chicklets and porn in your seat pan. I respect the skill you have as an aviator. I have been saved outright by good CAS and I love you guys for that. But please, give up the utter bullshit that you are going to eject from an attack aircraft, land in hostile territory, and suddenly be an effective rifleman when you maybe fire for qualification twice a year. Now that, my friend, is utter bullshit.

In short: None of that shit is hard....and who the fuck fires a rifle with one hand? You mean run the length of a football field with maybe equivalent of about 25 lbs worth of gear? Are you serious? Nobody is saying that you’re going to go full retard and make a last stand at the Allamo or take Omaha Beach, but you should be atleast have a professional mindset as a warfighting service (I.e. The Navy) if even the chance of it exists. That includes being aware of the capability of your weapon and providing yourself with the best chance for survival.

Agreed, and that is why I find the policy of not "allowing" aircrew to load their pistols when flying into combat extremely disheartening, to say the least. I have railed against it for years, and will continue to do so unless the policy is updated to reflect the realities of combat. The solution to CAG shooting a RR chair was better training (e.g. proper firearms discipline), not the effective disarmament of combat aircrew.

I was trusted to help operate a crew-served weapon . . . specifically, a $52 million combat aircraft. But if I so much as chambered a round in an $800 pistol, I'd have been sent home. :rolleyes:

@Hotdogs Dude, I am fully aware of the people I am talking too and about. I’ve spent plenty of time with Marine FACs and other services Terminal Controllers. So what? I know one FAC who needed an E4 to point out shit on the map for him. Just like ground pounders, some are good and some suck.

As an attack helicopter driver I am sure you take good care of your weapons, or at least I hope you do, but how how many guys not on dirt-det get that kind of experience and time?

So in the end your argument is that none of this rifle shit is hard? Really? Look, you learned to fly a helicopter at Whiting, right? So why are you wasting tax player dollars flying 20 or 30 hours a month? I mean why not just fly two hours a year and call yourself an expert? We all know why, because flying is a skill you need to keep up...well so are the fundamentals of marksmanship and ground survival. Who fires a rifle with one hand...NO ONE except an idiot. That’s my point. Who has 6 primary tasks and 33 sub-tasks on their immediate actions list when downed in enemy territory...YOU DO, and most of those tasks require one or more hands.

Yeah baby! If I get shot down in my 1946 Luscombe 8A I will have legit Army issue 1911 .45 and M1 Garand, black Nikes, tan 5.11 cargo pants with tactical instructor belt and clip knife in the back pocket, skin tight performance T shirt, tan ball cap with subdued American flag and I swear first thing I will do is get out a sharpie and draw a bad ass "tattoo" on my arm. Unfortunately, my beard doesn't grow fast enough to get that awesome SOF beard the enemy fears so much, before I have to kill 'em all.

Damn, you own the only aircraft in the US mine can catch up too! If I were you I’d skip the hat and go for the torn-tee shirt head tie. Far more cool.
