Thanks

I think I'll have the movers crate her up. I have close to 50K in her and I'd hate to see my baby girl go to sh*t in the snow. Thanks guys

Last year it went like this; february 18th through april 16th was freezing ass cold. It was bout 20-45, but with a constant 15-40mph wind coming off of the water. Then 2 days before we graduated it got up to 70 and gorgeous. It will rain and snow a lot until the summer. The summers in that area are usually decent. Hot, humid, mosquitoey. The area is beautiful though, so I would bring it, especially if you have a garage for it.

Service uniforms for Boost correct? Finally get to wear my Peacoat and the White Scarf

From what I understand the only uniforms I need to take will be the new working uniform and my Dress Blues. Is the new Navy PT gear required for NSI/Boost or is it casual dress?

I would like to drive to NSI/Boost since I will be there so long. Is that a problem?

Bring uniform components that carry over to khakis like black tie, black shoes, gloves, pea-coat (you will have to get new buttons sewn on and the epaulet holder things, but that is if you even want to have a pea coat for the new uniforms you will be issued) and other things that carry over. I would bring the new and old PT gear (boot camp issue) because officer accession programs were supposed to start issuing the new PT gear last spring, but who knows if that is actually happening and which one they will want you to wear. Everyone will be in official PT gear IAW Navy policy for organized PT sessions.

I would recommend driving to BOOST/NSI because you will most likely want to leave New Port at some time, and besides most people will not have a vehicle. That means you can collect the toll money ($2) for crossing the bridge to New Port and you can get gas money.

1. There is no toll to get to Newport from Base. The Bridge you speak of is the Jamestown bridge and you only need to cross it to go towards the airport or Providence. You won't cross it daily or anything.

2. I wish I would have brought my bike. The weather was extremely nice May-July and it would have been nice to have it. Up to you though.

3. Don't sweat BOOST. It is easy... the academics are a little challenging because of the amount of material they go over in the short time, but everything is very very do-able.

4. The rules of BOOST might change this year because the Mst Sgt marine who ran it before has since retired so someone else is taking over. I will make a phone call to a chief I know who works there and ask him if anything is different (i.e- it is now more strict, seabag inspections and such). Otherwise, BOOST and NSI were both cake. Just go where they tell you, study, and be on-time and you will have ZERO problems. It's so easy a caveman can do it.

5. If you are married and thinking about bringing your family to BOOST don't listen to the nay-sayers and leave your family at home if you want them around, especially if you have kids. I wish I would have brought my family with me. 6 months without them was another deployment! It was also crappy watching the guys with families leave at the end of the day during BOOST/NSI. It is nice to not have to sit in the barracks full time and deal with the drama. Not to mention having a living room to kick back in. If anyone has any questions about BOOST/NSI/College transfer feel free to e-mail me and I will hook you up with my experiences. Congrats, good luck, and Ciao.

Boost

It's 3000+ miles from Sacramento, Ca to RI. My truck gets around 15 mpg... Has anyone had any trouble filling a travel claim with gas reciepts?

No trouble, just took about a week from the time I submitted my travel claim until I got my money.

That is what I meant. Sorry I wasn't clear. When you go outside Newport you will pay the toll. I left Newport than you might think, but I went to Groton to see friends and to hit up the casinos. New York and Boston are across the bridge. You can get to Boston by not crossing the bridge, but you will spend more than $2 in gas to make up for the difference in distance, so if you go to Boston you will want to cross the bridge.

If you're in boost, you'll cross it many times going to Providence, at least that was where we went on the weekends in the winter. Plenty of good times up there. If I remember correctly they sell packs of tokens that end up being cheaper than going one at a time.

I have never worn my peacoat. not even when I was stationed in Groton, CT. i would go with the all weather coat, but that is my opinion.

I only crossed it to play golf in Jamestown, or go drinking in Warwick. Most of the other times I went the other way towards Boston or stayed in Newport. And yes they do sell a pack of 10 coins for like 10 bucks. Good deal.
