I strongly suspect that the vast majority of no shows are for missed connections and not passengers just not even arriving at the airport. Anyone know where to find stats on that?

It may be closer than you think. The average person might think that if weather goes to shit in the Northeast that may lead to thousands of displaced passengers due to delays and cancellations, leaving airlines in a huge mess right? Not really. It leaves passengers in a mess, not so much the airlines. The only obligation the airlines have to passengers in cases of delays or cancellations is trying to find them an open seat on future flights. Trying to find them an open seat, not bumping another passenger to get them a seat. For those passengers that can't get seats, they are just SOL since the airline has no obligation to compensate them for food or lodging either. The only thing a passenger can do is request a refund and find an alternate means of transportation. Even if a delay is due to a mechanical issue, the airline isn't required to compensate, but usually will as it's probably in their best interest to do so.

I think the #1 culprit in causing missed connections might be third part ticket sales websites that give 45 minutes between connections. From my experience, even if you get on the connnection, your bag probably didn't! Thanks a lot, gnome.

I've had the opposite happen where my luggage continued to my destination but I was stuck for a couple days.

Ranking of most denied boardings.

1. ExpressJet
2. JetBlue
3. Skywest
4. SWA
5. AA
6. Frontier
7. UAL

And that free ticket or credit in travel doesn't get you nearly as much on ExpressJet, JetBlue, SkyWest, Frontier, or even SWA compared to the big three.

The only time anyone in my family was bumped was by Delta on a trip to France (with a layover in NY?), wife arrived in plenty of time, checked in at the ticket counter, checked bags, was told boarding was at X:XX, went through TSA, bought a water arrived 15 minutes prior to boarding was supposed to start only to be told seat was given to another because she wasn't there in time and plane had already boarded, she tried to tell them she was there prior to time on the ticket, was promptly brushed aside told to call the 800 number, she found another gate agent at a flight that had already left, he looked at the ticked, looked at the computer, looked at her said "oh...." he made a phone call and in minutes she was re-booked on a direct flight, she arrived before her original flight. The first gate agent was a b***h, but the second was very professional.
