Well, I didn't recall correctly. Make that Subic Bay NB. Landed at Cubi Point lots of time, but never Subic Bay. Too many years and too many Cubi Specials.
Would be hard to land on Subic side for fixed wing. But I've launched and recovered many a RW aircraft from pierside at Subic.

One of the most mysterious accidents in US Navy history - USS Scorpion (SSN-589) - lost at sea around 22 May 1968. PBS's NOVA television show did a special on it many years ago.

But, let's not forget her revolutionary design came from the sky!

Speaking of submarines, there are the Japanese miniature subs of WW2. 2 torpedo tubes allowed a good punch. One of these torpedoes hit USS West Virginia at Pearl, another hit and severely damaged the British battleship HMS Ramillies in May 1942.

Some 80 Japanese miniature subs in drydock at the end of WW2.

We actually caught one on an uncharted Pacific Island, but the SWO - who had recently failed height/weight standards - was unable to fit inside for the 3 hour tour back to Hawaii.

Source? I thought salvage reports showed that damage to WV and OK was caused by aerial torps and that while a dud min-sub torp was found after the attack in the loch it hadn't hit anything. It's know that two of the mini subs made it into pearl but I don't think they've ever been given credit for a hit.

Competing wikipedia entries....so who knows...

Photographic analysis conducted by the United States Naval Institute in 1999 indicated that one of the five Ko-hyoteki-class submarines managed to enter Pearl Harbor, and successfully fired a torpedo into USS West Virginia. On 29 May 1942, one of two midget submarines managed to enter the Diego Suarez harbor and fire two torpedoes. One torpedo seriously damaged the battleship HMS Ramillies, while the second sank the oil tanker British Loyalty (6,993 tons).

Roger. What I read was that the strongest case was for a mini sub having torpedoed OK. The Wikipedia article on the Type A mini sub says that while it appears that the mini subs inside pearl did fire their torpedos none hit a US ship. Lots of nerdy talk about folks counting torp wakes and splashes during the initial attack but nothing definitive and all the after action analysis on raised ships seems to inidicate all the damage was consistent with aerial torps (albeit a lot of them).

The mini-sub theories always seemed silly to me. The Kates put more than enough torps on the water to do the job and the mini-subs were a forgettable footnote.

In case you need to waste a few hours on mini sub nerdery. The site was developed by the group that found I-16tou in 2009. Their analyses have shown possible Type 97 torp hits on USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma but no conclusive evidence.

Norman Polmar wrote a good book about the Glomar Explorer/K-129 project a few years back.

Project Azorian: The CIA and the Raising of the K-129

That looks like a good read. Hope to get to it one day.

The nerd is strong in this one - that I can respect. :)
