USAA is pretty good too! I use them for my insurance, both home and car.

pdx,
Do you have to be at OCS to get the commissioning loan? I could really use it right about now since I won't be getting any BAH while at OCS. 3% is freaking awesome.

You can only get it within the first 12 months AFTER commissioning. The amount and interest rate seem to vary, but it is always lower than anything else (except maybe student loans).

If you are single, you will not get BAH at OCS, but I actually came away from OCS with a little money in my pocket. I put all my stuff in storage and got rid of my house payment, utilities, etc. There is not much of a reason to keep a residence because you probably won't be going back to it anyway. If you have any questions about the process after commissioning, ask away.

Unfortunately I don't have enough time to sell my house before OCS. I'm hoping I do get orders back in this area (VA Bch, Norfork) and if I do I plan to sell the house anyway. I probably could have sold my house if I hustled but I really didn't want the headache right now. Plus I currently have a roommate.

Here's some questions for you pdx, thanks for you help.
When do we get orders to our next duty station? Do we leave OCS the day of graduation and report straight to our follow on school? How do we go about getting stashed if we have to wait to class up?

Nko

Has anyone been able to access the Navy NKO website? With the letter of acceptance it mentions doing some online courses but I haven't been able to get through the login and for the guest login it requires a sponser.

I tried sending an email through the website posted and they haven't responded yet and the number given on the letter directed me to someone other than OCS PAO?

Also, has anyone been able to get in touch with a mentor? I haven't had the opportunity yet but I was wondering what that is all about.

Well the problem for me is that it won't let me log on as a new user. I don't have login information yet and when I try to fill out the form with my name, SS, birthday, etc. It brings me to an error screen and prompts me to login as a guest but I don't have a sponsers nickname so I'm locked out at the moment.

Hey, have you contacted your sponsor yet? It's probably the same LT as me (probably our class officer). I'll forward you the email I got from my recruiter.

You might try to let out another room. Even if you do get back to Norfolk (which is quite possible) it will not be for about 2 years. Looking around the helo squadrons, about half of the Navy students are JGs by the time they earn their wings. P-3s take about the same, strike(jets) and E2/C2 take longer. I might still wing as an Ensign, but I have been pretty lucky (so far) and have not been stuck in any waiting pools for more than a week or two.

You will report to NASC (Naval Aviation Schools Command) on Friday afternoon after you commission. They will start the check in process and give you the weekend off. On Monday you will continue check-in tasks and be placed in A-pool (pre API waiting). You can only apply for leave or OHARP after you have met the requirements for BOLTC and IFS, and you have completed all the check-in paperwork (including a NAMI med up-chit). The wait in A-pool is quite variable. Don't pay much attention to people talking about how long or short your wait will be. Even the student control office can't really predict more than a few weeks in advance. It is amazing how fast an enormous pilot backlog can turn into a pilot shortage (and vice-versa). If you have a short wait, you will probably just muster. Depending on the prevailing mood of the student control officer (STUCON), you will either phone muster, muster everyday in person in khakis, or somewhere in the middle. If you settle in for a longer wait, they may choose to give you a stash job, or you can find a stash job for yourself. They usually will not authorize stash duty outside the local area. Although I have seen a few priors get hooked up with TAD orders to their old squadrons, etc.

Feel free to keep asking if there are terms or references you are not familiar with. Also, you might want to check out some of the old threads in the OCS forum. I know that myself and others posted some good info in them.

You can get access to the NKO website by going onto the official OCS website and clicking the "Contact Us" button. Tell them you would like a sponsor and give them the necessary info. Our class officer should email you back and give you the access information for NKO. It worked for me.

NKO Site

I'm probably retarded and the answer is right in front of my face. Anyways, I'm searching the NKO site for the Online OCS courses we are recommended to take and I click the "e-learning" link right under the big LEARNING tab at the top of the page and I can't find the "advanced search" button that is on the left side of the page. I tried the search at the top of the page to find the OCS courses but I'm not having any luck.

Ok. I'm SWO but I understand there may be some SNA's and NFO's in the September 9th class, or class 04-07 that may be posting here. If you haven't got wind of the USNAVYOCS.com thread, I'm trying to get some class members from 04-07 together for dinner on September 8th, so we can get to know each other and recognize some familiar faces on September 9th. So here's the necessary info. Aerospec, Amanda, and mlorg001 have already RSVP'd. So here's the pertinent information.

What: Dinner at Chili's

When: 7:30pm-7:45ish (err... I meant 1930-1945...ahem) on Friday, September 8th.

Where: Chili's Restaurant
4781 Bayou Blvd.
Pensacola, FL 32503-2607
Map:

I look forward to meeting all of you and putting faces to names.
