Sailor Sits During National Anthem on Base

When it comes to individual service members' responsibilities, Sailors must understand they must abide by the Uniform Code of Military Justice at all times. In accordance with Navy regulations, (OPNAVINST 1710.7A), "Whenever the National Anthem is played, all naval service personnel not in formation shall stand at attention and face the national ensign. In the event that the national ensign is not displayed, they shall face the source of the music." Additionally, per NAVADMIN 098/09, which is intended to "eliminate any confusion regarding appropriate honors to the flag by Navy personnel," the NAVADMIN states, in part, "During the playing of the national anthem, or the raising, lowering, or passing of the national flag, Sailors will continue to follow the policy and procedures outline in (OPNAVINST 1710.7A 15 Jun 2001). Specifically, Sailors not in uniform will face the flag, stand at attention, and place the right hand over the heart."

Pops told me about seeing Patton in the base theater on Oki when it was first released. Opening monologue - big flag, everyone assumed it was for the anthem and stood at attention. Then George C Scott comes stomping out and everyone got to feel like a sucker.

It was the first time I experienced it, from then on just seemed normal.

Now I take my own recording of the National Anthem when I see a movie out in town and play it before each movie........ I am now barred from 17 movie theaters

In other news, there was apparently a fist fight at the 32nd street base theatre when some chuckleheads decided to sit during the anthem prior to a movie being played.

This is just a pure emotional answer but I would say those guys that hit the ones sitting should get a stern talking to, and no more.

It is strange, not to mention inconvenient to put all your popcorn, drinks, etc down in order to jump to your feet before a political commissar sees you.

When I was stationed in the UK, my Brit neighbors were rather intrigued by this when I brought them to a movie on base. Although they found it odd, they were impressed at the same time.

I wish the anthem was played before movies at off-base theaters here in California... even if I have to put down my popcorn.

Never happen. In CA, I'm sure that would result in immediate legal action against the theaters by the ACLU or somesuch political organization trying to justify their existence. Plus, people would stay seated, leave their hats on, flip the bird, and otherwise act like idiots. Then I'd get angry, and I don't want to get angry when I go see a movie.
