The good thing about staying affiliated while applying to OCS is that you don't have to go through a recruiter. You also seem to have more communication with the powers that be (i.e. the people in bupers that handle your package). You are competing with the same people that are applying to OCS via a recruiter. I think that military service makes your application look better but I'm not sure about that. Hope that helps.

reserves do go through a recruiter. The process is similar to civilian, but with a few twists.
You need a CO endorsement. At some commands this can take longer to get than at others. If you receive a pro-rec, you will then need to submit a Conditional Release form (DD368? I'm not sure if that is the correct form number).

Other than that, it is very similar to the civilian process.

SELRES types applying for OCS do go through normal recruiters. The reserve experience does help out. Maybe the biggest benefit is you can easily get LORs and edorsements from naval officers that are in a position to actually make a judgement on your officer potential. The board put a lot of weight on those.

so how long do I have to wait in the reserves before I can apply for OCS. See, my back-up plan is to do law school while in the reserves and then apply for OCS asap.

If you are enlisted in the reserves there is no min wait before you can apply for OCS. As a practical matter you get max benefit of your affliation if you are in the reserves long enough to be observed and evaluated by your division and commanding officers. If they don't know you they will probably write tepid recommendations. As to law school...are you planning on applying for OCS after law school to fly, or some other line officer designator? If you were hoping for a JAG slot they are nearly impossible to get as a law school graduate. Only way to get into the JAG Corps is through the JAG Student Program (no real money, just a guaranteed job). In that case you get a direct commission in the reserves and go to some training in the summer as an officer with pay. During school you are a reserve officer with no pay, no billet and no drills. After graduation you are brought on active duty as a JAG Officer. If you are going for the law degree and then to fly, watch your age. The age waiver for prior service is active duty year for year up to two years. So you get no break as a SELRES sailor with no prior active duty.

Hi All,

I think that being in the reserves can def. make you a more well-rounded OCS Applicant - I've known several people in my unit who have sought to do exactly that, myself included. Enlisted experience, especially in the same field as what you want to be commissioned in (i.e. Intel), can't hurt.

Just my .02.

OOPS, sorry about the bad gouge  . When I was a selres applying for STA-21 don't remember having a recruiter. Just remember going through the career counselor. Could be wrong though.

STA-21 is different. No recruiter, just chain of command. STA-21 sends you to school with pay to finish degree. OCS is another animal. You were not so wrong.
