As a reservist, do we have a detailer we can address questions to? Or is that only for active duty?

Thanks!

No detailer, per se. Each NIRR has an "Officer In Charge" (OIC) who performs these tasks (i.e., unit assignments, mobilizations, et al.).

How do I determine who that is to speak to in San Diego?

Charlie...didn't you just get selected?

Pump the brakes, man! :icon_tong All of that stuff will work itself out. You won't need orders or a new unit until at least one month after your INDOC drill weekend. By that time, you'll have met/been introduced to some of the officers in your NIRR...the OIC probably being one of them.

I can't meet my OIC if I'm in the wrong region. I've moved from Texas to Utah and I was told that I needed to find out who the detailer for the San Diego area was to get me moved over there. I spoke with the detailer in Denver (nice guy) and he told me that I needed to at least speak to the guy in San Diego so that he knows I'm headed that way since I'm not on his books at all. That was the reason behind the question. I was also told that since I'm in the wrong region, time was of the essence to get it changed prior to DCOIC. Could be wrong but I'd rather be on the ball when the time comes rather than dragging in at the last minute if at all due to technicalities. But thanks for the advice.

Junior Officers apply for available billets by way of the JOAPPLY program. CNRFC N12 runs the JOAPPLY cycle. If you are a DCO you wont be eligible for a hard billet right of the bat. You will likely be placed IAP (In Assignment Processing) at a local like unit. IDC go to IDC Units, Supply go to Supply Units, etc.. Once you attend DCOIC, (required within 1 year of commissioning) you will be able to apply for a hard billet via JOAPPLY.

Just stumbled upon some updated information about the different reserve officer skill communities. Each file provides a break out of expected (and possible) career progressions, along with the core values one should encompass. Might be good for those building an application (kit).

IW is here (page 42): http://www.npc.navy.mil/bupers-npc/...ITY BRIEFS/FY-16 RES Line Community Brief.pdf

The encompassing page "Community Briefs": http://www.npc.navy.mil/bupers-npc/boards/reserveofficer/Pages/Briefs.aspx

In May I was selected for AMDO DCO. I just got off the phone with my recruiter who says I should commission around 1 October (lovely fiscal year). I ask her questions about the AMDO community, what courses I would need to take, what billets I can take etc., etc., and she isn't sure because I'm the first one she has had that has been selected. I've scoured the posts and the webs, which led me to the community briefing, but I can't find much more information. It's been a long time since I was selected and I am starting to get a little antsy. She mentioned that it was odd I hadn't heard from anyone within the community yet. I also can't seem to access half of the links that I see on the site. Any tidbits would be appreciated :-D

So, what happens after you get selected. How long must one wait before they can start drilling and receiving pay?

Someone with more experience can chime in, but you won't start getting paid until after you start drilling. You won't start drilling until you have been commissioned which may be after the new fiscal year starts, Oct. 1, 2019. Then after that, your OR should assist in finding a local unit and NOSC. Depending on your designator there is a regional DCO Officer who will reach out and touch base with you and put you in touch with someone from that unit. Your first drill may be at NOSC INDOC or maybe with your unit.

You'll wait for the commissioning documents (COMDOCS) to be generated at the NAVRESFOR level, which can take about 35-45 days. During this time, your OR may ask you to re-sign some docs, and sign some new ones as well.

Over the past couple years, I've seen NAVRESFOR drop JO's into units that don't match their designator, or even their community. We got a nurse one time. If you know what type of unit you should be in, it might be a good idea to help your OR help CNRC out, but giving them a list that makes sense.

Once you swear in, identify your closest NOSC and get the drill schedule. Proactively contact them and get confirmed for indoc. You don't exist until you are gained by NOSC Manpower dept. Don't expect the NOSC to know everything that you have to do. They only know the (minimum) things that they are required to do to get you in the door. As a commissioned officer, you need to really take care of yourself the first 90 days. That's long enough to find a mentor (ship/shore daddy) to help you sort things out.

Never give up your original, and make five hard copies + digital of everything.

Any time you contact a NOSC dept, get in the habit of CC'ing the NOSC XO. It teaches folks how to not lose emails.
