I have the 2005 edition sitting in front of me, but just for your enjoyment I did a little searching for everybody and found the 2006 edition (I am terrible at internet searching):

http://hqinet001.hqmc.usmc.mil/p&r/concepts/2006/toc.htm

Chapter 5, page 3

Note the number I was talking about is the 75xx MOS. Aviation logistics, maint., and ordnance are separate.

Thanks for the link, here is the breakdown...

Pilot/NFOs -- 5,322 -- 28.18%
Infantry -- 2,122 -- 11.24%
Logistics -- 1,406 -- 7.45%
Field Artillery -- 861 -- 4.56%
Air C2 -- 529 -- 2.80%
Aircraft Maint. -- 403 -- 2.13%
Tank & AAV -- 320 -- 1.69%
Aviation Logistics -- 247 -- 1.31%
Aviation Ordnance -- 94 -- 0.50%
Total ==> 18,885

All aviation based MOSs = 35.84% of USMC Officers

According to the 2005 Concepts and Programs publication (published by HQMC) there were a total of 5,146 officers in the Pilot/NFO MOS(75XX). That is more than any other single MOS. The total number of officers was 18,839.

Yes, but that's different than saying "most Marine officers are pilots". 5,146 out of 18,839 does not constitute "most".

I think he may be getting USAF and USMC confused. Most Marine Officers are NOT pilots, that just doesn't make sense.

Though I've been told often that a higher percentage of Marine officers are pilots than are USAF officers. Walking around AFBs, I'd believe that, too.

Interesting thought, so I did a little searching and compared the numbers to those I found for the Marine Corps...this is what I came up with...

USMC pilots/NFOs: 28.18%
USAF pilots/navs: 24.89%

I wouldn't have guessed that till I looked it up...then again part of the reason that number is so low is because of the vast diversity of MOSs that the Air Force has...including "Veterinarians" and "Urologist"...

Yes, most Marine officers are not aviators, but I think we are all shocked at how many are.

Future pilot update.

It seems that flying is going to be a little more diffcult over Christmas break. Our Mid called home to tell us that he's going to Aruba on Spring Break and oh by the way, I broke my left hand lifting weights. His middle finger metacarpal is the victim. I guess he will learn early the lesson to lightly grip the yoke. His older brother who's doing the instructing doesn't think it will be a problem. Oh well, he gets to go to class in his jogging suit because he's not able to do buttons. I'm just glad it was his off hand, been there done that and got the tee shirt.

He also told us that he has received some info on his career starter loan. Any idea or suggestions regarding, "the loan"? Do's and don'ts.

Thanks folks, have a great holiday,

As far as the loan, I personally think it is a good deal. Don't get me wrong, I could do without paying back $431 every month. But where else can you get $20,000 for 1%? My suggestionis to get a nice, dependable vehicle. You do a lot of driving in your first couple of years.

Do get a nice car, or pay off higher interest debt (if applicable).

Don't blow it ALL on Hookers & Blow. That is what Per Diem is for.

Take $3K, put it in a 1 year CD to buy his USMC uniforms. That's what I did. Of course, the rest of it, I really have no clue what I spent it on...

And I've got a question, how do you define "most Marine officers are pilots." By that do you mean that 75XX MOS's compared to the total of ALL other MOS's? If so, then it's false. However, if you're going to break it down by 75XX MOS versus individual fields then I would say its true... It's all semantics.
