Promotion in the IRR

We've had a few guys in my unit get extensions and a requst for extension now requires a CO endorsement, a letter explaining your recent participation in the reserves and that you currently be 'Fully Medically Ready'. If those weren't included in your request I'm not surprised you didn't get one.
And of course as an IRR member, I have no CO to endorse anything and haven't had a Navy physical in several years. Nor did the continuation request form that I received say anything about any of that. =)

Late to this thread, but I was an assistant recorder on an O4 board and saw a couple of people get picked up for O4 out of the IRR.

How long had they been in the IRR? I'm guessing less than a year and their last FITREP was current?

I was promoted to O-4 in the IRR, and had been for a couple of years. I am a CEC, 5105 and was deployed 3 years before I was promoted.

Not a clue. And it does not matter. If they have a quota to fill, they fill it with the "best and most qualified" from the particular pool.

Is that new? When I left Sel-Res...I still had another FITREP cycle to go before my O-5 Board...as a result, I was pretty much told I was DOA for O-5 since my last FITREP would be stale. It would be good for folks if that didn't matter anymore.

It still matters. Big difference in selection between O4 and O5 reserve boards. Taking out NPC fuzzy math and going with the standard, 90% select to O4 and 70% select to O5 (1 recent board had 95% select to O4). The last few O4 boards selected pretty much everyone to the point that there were very few above zone. Meaning you actually had to work harder to not select to reserve O4!

O5 is where the competition really begins for reserve promotion.

Last Reserve O4 board saw 67% select rate for Intel which is pretty low. People with multiple MOB's were not selected. Us IP's on the other hand had 87% select rate, which is main reason why I changed designators from Intel to IP.

Yeah...I know different communities will have differing selection percentages. I was only thinking of the regular URL (swo, sub, aviation). The last few boards have been pretty high rates for us to O4.

@bubblehead - How did they identify the IRR from the SELRES? Was it briefed or some type of "tag" on the record or was it just evident in the record review?
Once you are in the IRR (Either ASP or VTU) or are in S1 status, you are still in the list of eligibles for promotions. One you hit S2 status, you are no longer eligible to promote.

I recognize that IRR members are promotable. I guess what I'm asking, since you served as a recorder, is there anything immediately recognizable to the board as they brief the records? I figure they go from officer to officer fairly quickly, as I'm sure they don't want to be there any longer than they have to. As they brief records, is there any "tag" that would immediately clue you in that a particular officer is IRR?

You said you saw someone promote to O4 from IRR. How did you know they were IRR?

I would also think that anyone that was S2 wouldn't even be presented to the board. Millington admin should take those records out the mix well ahead of a board convening.

Read the instruction I sent you. S2 is not eligible for promotion and is not in the list of eligibles.

There are two flavors of IRR: ASP and VTU. The person I saw who got promoted, was in the IRR/ASP Active Status Pool and wrote a letter to the board.

Re, knowing they are in the IRR. I cannot recall the specific marker and it may have been on the PSR presented. The briefer would also know because of the FITREPs and other data in your record (unit assignment, status, etc.).

Reservists in the IRR are eligible and will be considered by this board.

When I sat as an asst recorder on an O5 board It was noted if somebody was ASP. I specifically recall somebody briefing a strong record of a guy who’d gone IRR (ASP, yes) and ADM Lemons said something like “sorry ASP...no go”. The briefer made the case again and was shot down again.

At the O5 level at least, I think that the instruction means that asp is considered for (failure of) selection.
