...nevermind that the Marine Corps doesn't have their own medical, and thus, the vision requirements are the same in the Navy.

Designated Same standards as SG1 except:
DVA
Correctable to 20/20-0 each eye (However, if AFVT or Goodlite letters are used a score of 7/10 on the 20/20 line constitutes meeting visual acuity requirements), glasses will be worn while flying (if > 20/100 carry extra pair).

I stand corrected. Did this change recently? I specifically remember reading somewhere during my application process that NFO requirement was 20/100 or better. Can't tell you where I read that from off hand, but it was official enough (USMC document or somesuch) for me to take heed.

Back before I had PRK, my recruiter said that I could go NFO and that my vision wouldn't really matter as long as it was corrected to 20/20...I'm glad I had the PRK.

yo, THIS GUY, are you serious about the glasses thing? i can wear glasses if i am an NFO? if you are saying that i will not need perfect vision to be an NFO, you will make my day, really you will. the marine corps guy, T-MAN, said that NFO vision requirements were 20/100.

My goodness Lane. You remind me of my lil brother sometimes cuz he too is also a freshman in college and nags me about vision reqs.

Yes, thats correct. NFOs can wear glasses, or contacts. FOs who get PRK do it for personally reasons, like fed up with contacts or what not. So you do not need "perfect" vision to become an NFO. After your physical, DODMERB or BUMED will inform you if you have surpassed the vision reqs. But you should be fine. STOP STRESSIN!!!

I hope this answers your questions.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but as I'm coming up on service selection and probably going NFO, I'm wondering how soon would the Navy pay for the eye surgery? Additionally, since there is such a wait for NFOs to start API, is there any chance they would pay for me to do it if I got stashed at my unit or while in the A-pool in PCola?

I'm not "in" yet. I'm still in college and in BDCP. But YES, I am NPQ'd with a waiver for PRK. As for API, I don't know...

Old thread, but it caught my attention in a search.

I was under the impression that you weren't allowed to get PRK after swearing into the BDCP program? I am pro-rec'ed for NFO right now and want to get PRK as soon as possible. If the Navy will allow me to get PRK before OCS, even if it's out of my own pockets, that would be ideal.
