TAR isn't just a place to go and "drop the pack" and build hours. Plus, they don't take dirt bags. So, you need the good package, hehe package, plus a good rep for when the TAR community starts looking into you. This of course is from my vantage point lookin into the community and asking ppl questions. Also, looking at the latest info off of the web page, and then next selection, still looks like they are taking VP guys (though only, what 4-5 slots?), you can still apply 18 mos prior to your expiration of ALL commitments (as long as the APR/OCT board is in that window), and they have an emphasis on VR fills (increase in VR squadrons and VP reserves going away, hmmm?....).

Any other TAR (FTS) aviation bubbas plz correct me if I am mistaken...

Nope, jg had it right. And there isn't anything temporary about it. It is active duty all the way until you resign. A Reservist that is on his two week active duty for the year is considered on AT (annual training). If you are a Reservist on active duty for several weeks you may be on what is called ADSW (active duty for special work). If you take a recall or are involuntarily recalled for a year or more, you are simply on active duty with a USNR commission, like most all junior officers. Generally, on completion of those orders you would be released to your previous reserve status or you may be able to elect to stay on active duty. If you did that and you are an O-4 or above you would have to get augmented to the Regular Navy real soon or they would simply spit you out later, before you could make a career of it.
