See if you can get an appointment at NAMI in Pensacola, FL to an in depth eye exam. The perception test there is better & I had no problem passing it there.

First time post, hey guys I'm on the Jan board and was wondering what have you guys heard about having civilian ratings. I've heard both sides that the Navy likes applicants with experience because they know they'll do well in flight school but I have also heard that they don't necessarily like people with experience because they can have bad habits that need breaking so they would prefer people without. I would hope it would help because I've been going off what my recruiter said that it could make up for my poor gpa (2.9 in an aviation degree)

The highest rate of aviation drops from my NRD in flight school were those that had flying experience, anywhere from PP license to CFI

If you want to be a pilot better to pull the application and get the test done, if you don't care than go with it, just don't expect to get moved from NFO to SNA down the road.

I would rather be a pilot yes. But i have been in this process for almost 2 years now and in all honestly just want to be done. I started the process of joining the navy in march of 2017 with NUPOC program. At this point, i just care about serving more than the designator tbh

If you look at what NRC considers competitive, it lists that having prior flying experience as an advantage. It’s written down on paper that it increases your chances of being selected. I’ll try to find the link for you for what NRC considers competitive.

Yeah it was old stuff. I just figure it’s good to have the knowledge of basic flying and having the certificates helps separate yourself a little, but I guess that as long as you can adjust to the “military way of flying”, then we should be fine.

thanks for the help, I saw that link, was just wondering what you guys have heard because some recruiters have told me one thing and others the complete opposite about having prior flight experience so was just wondering what you guys have heard

That flying experience wasn't even relevant 10 years ago, so don't know how far back you would need to go to make it relevant.

From speaking to various recruiters/current Navy pilots, flying experience seems to make your packet more competitive, but doesn't necessarily mean you've got a better chance of passing flight school, hence previous pilots coming in and failing whereas non-pilots excel. Also have heard about ego issues for the same reason. Just my two cents.

Anyways, pretty sure I'm on this board although I've gotten a bit of radio silence from my recruiter the last month and a half, so we'll see. Regardless I'll be very anxious for the next few weeks, good luck everyone!

Agreed my man! I don’t think it will hurt having prior knowledge of how the aircraft operates and knowing all of the systems, but of course the ego can be the largest concern. Just have to be humble about it & do what is needed! Goodluck!

Every single person that jumps into the cockpit of a T-6 these days has solo'd an aircraft at some point in their life, so I don't think the ego thing is as big as people make it out to be, unless you've been flying for years with hundreds of hours, which the vast majority have not. You've either done it with a PPL or you've done it in IFS.
