If you don't get a 300, don't even bother.
Related note, I saw a proposal for a new PFT/CFT scoring system.
Under this new system, a 1st class is 275 or higher (for all age brackets).
To compensate, as you age, you get more points for the same performance level.
For example, a 28-year old could get a 300 with a 19:00 run, 18 pullups, and 92 crunches.
Weird, eh?

Sounds like how the Navy works for PRTs.

What get me a Good low at 30, would be EPIC FAIL for a 18 year old. Unless the 18 year old was a female, then it would be outstanding.

14, 100, 22 something. I have not heard anything about sloping the PFT score for age.

They should increase difficulty of the PFT. There are too many fit people getting close to 300. They should make crunches like 150-200 and pullups 25.

just my opinion.

My Score:

20 pull
100 crunch
19:26 Run plus a high elevation waiver (5000 ft at my place)

300 with a waiver. 291/292 without waiver.

That was 3 weeks ago. run time is lower now.

Why is that a problem? Figuring out a Marine's fitness is why there's a "F" in PFT.

Yes, in the world of 20-21 YO officer candidates, there are a lot of 290+ scores. Go to a fleet unit of average Marines and maybe only 5% are scoring that high.

The scoring system should remain the same. 5pts/PU; 1pt/crunch; and -1pt/10sec on the run is easy to remember.

Yeah, but increasing difficulty or score would hopefully increase physical fitness of the Corps even higher, which would make the Corps even more elite.

Now, this is just my opinion, which right now means squat because i'm not even in the Corps yet--only contracted to go to PLC.

My other reason for this opinion is because I think there are alot more "fit" people to choose from in the USA now, because of this i think the standard of fitness should be higher.

The only way to make the Marine Corps more "elite" is to reduce its size. We've decided we need 202,000 Marines. Now our job is to recruit and train the best ones we can.

Believe me, the problem is not that too many Marines are pushing 300s--raising the maxes isn't going to change anything. Raising the minimums might--but would also mean that we might actually have to give Marines time to work out on Uncle Sam's clock and not their own.

If anything, society is filled with more out-of-shape fatbodies than ever, especially in the age groups recruiters target. Breaking out the few good ones who want to make something of themselves is the Sisyphean task of the recruiter.

Do not be discouraged, hard charger. But I don't think the Corps needs to be any more "Elite" than it already is. When you get some fleet time in, you will see OUTSTANDING Marines that do their job above and beyond, set the example, look squared away, have great leadership, and know their MOS with one flaw. They can't score well on a PFT. They can PT okay, but this stuff just happens. Raising PFT standards will just lead to more disparity and attrition. Besides, many still argue the PFT's ability to measure combat effectiveness, hence the CFT.

I do like the age curve of PFT classes now considering your knees begin to resemble cantelopes from all that running over the years. A further age curve seems like a luxury to me.

8wood, damn good score. On that note, when the group of us did the run portion, there was a girl there who I think is actually in a sorority. Yea, she was hot too. She blew us away on the run, i think she got 18:45. She just doesnt fit the profile of a female USMC O Candidate.
