The only people I see leaving without MC quals are those that had significant problems upgrading. These cases happen, but are the exception.
This has a LOT do to with the culture of the squadron and what their reputation is within the Wing. I have seen many folks (Pilots & FO's) depart without MC because of what you mention above and/or not living up to the reputation of what the front office believed was acceptable.

middle of the Atlantic creeping along 100 kts slower and 10k ft lower than anyone else with shitty equipment

See, but you know how to handle that situation. The P-8 guy hasn't had to...granted I'm speaking out of a naive mouth, but I'm not one to envy the people who get it easy in life early on...survival of the fittest has its ways. And is it not better to have issues that are common and expected than a critical failure when you think all is good on a brand new a/c?

Ummm, no. It's 2017, modern aircraft and modern avionics are essential, especially for one that could see combat. What you're talking about is training. I have a classic car which I love, but it's a lot of work and I only drive it for fun. My daily driver is a modern car, reliable, efficient and way more comfortable. It's called progress.

The P-8 isn't exactly a new airframe, being the same basic airframe as the most popular airliner in history so there shouldn't be a lot surprises there. The kinks are going to likely come from the missions systems on aboard and I imagine the pilots won't be anywhere near as concerned about those since they will likely be busy talking about which airline they will be applying to in a few years.
