NFO To Pilot Transition Question

Just wanted to jump in here and say that I found out I was DQed for Pilot tonight. I got over it in all of one hour. It's a fvcking honor to have the opportunity to train as an NFO and I'm ashamed that for even one second I thought otherwise.

leehigh80, I'm no Navy guy but I know we've got the same core values. Maybe you should reexamine those values and seriously consider whether you're cut out for this line of work.

NFOs have a sweet deal down here in PCola. NASP is pretty damn sweet and living in Perdido Key in a condo aint half bad either. Beats the hell outta Milton, FL.

What is the exact age cut off for NFO to pilot. According to BUPERS and pers 814, it looks like 29. The verbage is "NFO's who have NOT YET reached their 29th birthday". Also on BUPERS is a sample app for transition the verbage is "I certify I will be no older than 29 by ___ date." The latter suggests you can be 29 and 364 days old by X date and be ok. I have also heard that as long as you start primary by the time you are 30 thus ensuring winging at 31 you're ok. MILPERSMAN 1542-010Pilot "applicants must not have passed their 27th birthday at the time of application. For applicants with prior activeduty military service, waivers may be granted on a month-for month basis up to 24 months for active duty served prior totheir 27th birthday, to maximum age of 29." Is it possible to get an age waiver beyond this? Anyones .02 would be appreciated.

That's awesome - good for you! :) Time to redouble your efforts and make this gift count.

Thanks a lot. I got some help from a Senior member of the Corps; unsolicited, he's a local reservist who kind of heard about me by chance. I was informed that he will come 'looking' for me if I attrite.

Gents, I'm looking for some advice on the NFO to Pilot application process, specifically the letter of recommendation section of the application. Would any of you that picked up the transition be willing to share who you got your LORs from? I'm not sure if I should stick to DH/XO/CO, or add additional ones from outside the squadron as well.

Any and all gouge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It's been a few years, but at the time when I was picked up for transition most applicants received LORs from their CO and CAG/Commodore. Coming from a carrier air wing it was pretty much accepted that in order to be competitive you had to have the number one endorsement from your respective CAG. Some individuals (myself included) received a third LOR from the battle group Admiral as well. This is obviously easier when deployed and you are able to get some face time with him on the boat. The Admiral LOR was much shorter and from my perspective the number one CAG endorsement is what was key. I also asked for one from a former CO for a total of 4. Hope this helps.

Oh dear. You've just gone and done the dumbest thing of your life!

^^Oh wow this made me laugh. :D

I'm kind of curious what happened to this guy. Reminds me of my old chop, had a huge chip on his shoulder :\

No gouge on transition, but you'd have to change your personal statement if you get picked up. "A Pilot is a Pilot...and NFO is something else....until he's a Pilot"

Just out of curiosity,

I’ve noticed that on previous years board results all selectees have been LTs...has anyone heard of a LTJG getting selected?

Pretty sure you have to be fully qual'd in order to be considered for a transition and most often tend to do it after their first tour or towards the very end of it, so not many JG's fit into those categories.

What Flash said, plus you’ll need a breakout competitive FITREP (EP) to carry you through the board process and your two-three years of non-observed time in flight school. While there have been applicants picked up with MPs in the past, it hurts your future career progression. If selected, you’ll likely be going before the O-4 board competing against officers with sea and shore tour FITREPS, and you’ll only have your sea tour FITREP.

I say this as someone who applied with strong letters of recommendation and who wasn’t selected due to a lack of a breakout FITREP (my former CO sat on the board and clued me into the results).

It’s okay, if you want to be a bus driver bad enough, most aviaition Jobs on the outside are hiring.

I know a few NFOs/ and non rated folks who have built time on their own and decided to get out stay reserves and go the ISR or 121 regional route (more seem to favor the ISR route due to familiarity with the mission set, clearance, and lower hiring requirements in place these days).
