'New' Reserve Retirement Info

AQ-AT-NAVCIV

Citizen Sailor, Gentleman Farmer
Sorry, I was referring to a Break in service and the effect that would have on which program you would have if you came back in after '18.

And looks like you have 30 days to choose which retirement you would want.

Q1.12. What if I have a break in service—can I still opt into the Blended Retirement System?

A1.12. If you have left or leave the military and rejoin after the opt-in decision year (2018), you will have 30 days to decide whether to stay in the legacy retirement system or elect the new Blended Retirement System upon returning to military service, so long as you are either in the Active Component and meet the less than 12-year service criterion or in the Reserve Component and have less than 4,320 retirement points.

If your in the window to keep Legacy while on active duty and then switch to the reserves after Jan 2018 do you lose the legacy option? What is considered a new accession in the reserves?

I can't find where it states this, but I recall this from going through the videos on the BRS webpage...a new accession refers to someone newly accessed off the streets into the Reserves...i.e. no prior service/0 points.

Going from active to reserve is really just a matter of going from "years of service" to "points". If you have 12 or more years in the Active Component or have more than 4320 points in the Reserve you're grandfathered to legacy and if you have less, currently serving Active or Reserve, you have the option to choose.

You won't lose anything when you switch as long your active time is correctly calculated and translated to reserve points.

Like I said, 'trust but verify'. I trust that'll be the case but I'd like to see it in writing too.

Understood. It's definitely on the website, but I don't feel like going through the training again...lol!

Another way of thinking about this: Coming into the military is an accession; transitioning from active to reserve is an affiliation (you're already accessed).
