Thank you for your posts. I was trying to submit with my current score however, the recruiter I have will not submit me because he said my ASTB scores were too low. What should I do to get submitted before I retake a third time?

Right, again, submit with your current score. Also, talk to an officer recruiter and politely drop your current enlisted recruiter (No burning bridges ;) ). Call the number at the end of this post and they will find your closest officer recruiter and inform you of it. Just get all your documents in order and take them with you when you meet with your OR (officer recruiter). You should be able to submit fairly soon: probably in time for the October boards, which results you would get back mid-late October.

Also note that being a naval officer is not for everyone. Not trying to discourage you but you should have looked up the following... McAllen, Texas is near San Antonio so I have to imagine that is where your OR is. Call the Officer Programs Office for more info:

Navy Recruiting District San Antonio
1950 Stanley Road, Suite 16 - Ft. Sam Houston, TX 78234 210-295-9560

Yes, the local recruiter is enlisted. However, I am dealing with an officer recruiter a couple of towns away. However, ever since I met him. He is difficult to reach and I always have to travel there. I do not mind going there, however, it seems as if we never get anything accomplished. Also, he is also in Grad school right now and warned me that he is really busy!

As for October, the submittal date has already passed. The deadline was September 25th, 2009. But again, that is according to the officer recruiter. Last Thursday, I went there will all hopes I would at least get submitted but no. At the last minute he called to inform me, I could not submit.

Question: I have tried to contact my officer recruiter to ask him this but no luck ~ What happens after I submit, if I am not selected? Am I eligible to submit for the following board after retaking the ASTB. Or how does that work? Because if I have to wait six months or better to re-apply then, I may want to hold off.

Thank you for your time.

As I have had it explained to me, you do not have to wait the 6 months if you have made significant improvements to your package - retaking the ASTB and scoring higher would allow you to resubmit sooner. Also think about doing some interviews and whatnot if you don't get selected.

good luck

You won't make any (or at least much) progress with the enlisted recruiter. Unless you want to go the enlisted to officer route. You need to be mindful of the age limitations though: as an enlisted Sailor, you do get extension waivers, but there are still limits.

ORs are busy. They are busy just dealing with their applicants' workload, let alone the other things they have going on. You have to understand that patience is key in the services' officer programs. Just keep contact with them via email if the phone calls don't work out in a timely enough manor. Research what you need: your OR should have sent you a few documents of what is necessary. You will need to submit an official college transcript, you need your social security card, work references, letters of recommendation, ect. It is all within a couple lists on these documents. Email your OR and set up an appointment and bring all this to your appointment to get as much done as possible. There is also the govt application online that takes quite a while to complete, in addition to your regular application that you should have. (In bold are a few things that can take some time.)

My bad on saying Oct. I meant November.. Why did he say you could not submit yet? What is holding you up? (See above to be prepared.)

If you aren't selected, you can either "greatly"/"vastly" improve your package to resubmit for the next selection boards (i.e. improve your ASTB by any amount; improve your GPA; or even get interviews in the fields you are seeking (Not positive on the last, but improving your ASTB scores or GPA is considered a vast improvement that will allow you to submit in the next month's applicant pool)), OR you can wait 6 months and resubmit with basically the same package (e.g. no improvements).
So, in short: yes you can resubmit the following month after retaking the ASTB, if you improve your scores. DukeAndrew is correct.

Hope that helps. Sounds like you are on your way... Just find out what your package is missing. Gather that info and take it to your appointment with your OR.

I took the test for the 1st time and scored a 5/5.

But I needed a 4/6 to pass (Marines).

There is so much aviation and nautical info, and I'm not sure what else to study or where to find it?...The questions are soo random.

Does anyone have any advice on how to go about preparing for my 2nd test? Or where some good info is that may push me over the hump?

I want to get in the 7's because my GPA was a 2.5

So'Cal,
There's plenty of Gouge available in the ASTB section of this website. LOOK AROUND and find it, then study it.

Bull Gator- Thank you for the information. I have all of the above and my package is complete. I am being told that I will not make it and that it is a waste of time in submitting me. I do not care what they think. I would like to be submitted even if I will not be selected the first time. It is to my understanding that the board will take into account improvement from the last time submitted. Hope someone will submit me sooner or later.

By your enlisted recruiter, or by your officer recruiter? Have you contacted your OR since the last time you posted in September, and how (email, phone, person)?

If your package is complete, it is not very time consuming on the OR's end, I believe: someone (secretary/staff) processes the package for you... I don't know the ins and outs so much, so take this with a grain of salt, but he/she may just want to see you try harder and hit it out of the park on your first attempt. Maybe they see something in you. You do need to keep in mind that your OR will write a letter about their opinion on you so do show initiative. Maybe if you tell them you will take the test in X number of days (start studying again), AND would like to submit your package for this month, that may work... If all else fails, search for a similar thread or start a thread (if your search didn't work) in the Paths to a Commission, Questions about becoming a Naval Officer, or the Navy OCS forums about this problem and to see if there are other avenues you can take to become an officer candidate. You would get much better and more knowledgeable replies in those forums, imo.

-Keep your head up and have a great weekend. Waiting is part of the game. :icon_wink

Dude, do a more thorough search. As we've noted tons of times, there are MULTIPLE posts with working links and attachments.

Me and DukeAndrewJ have posted all of our gouge that we used for the test. Click on my name and search the posts. I believe its in the "1001 things about the ASTB" or something like that thread.

Also, you can do a simple google search for more info. Not faulting you for wanting help, but do a bit more legwork first.

Hey everyone. This is my story....I applied for the Navy and a commission in march of 2009. I scored a 43 overall and don't remember my OAR. I was denied a commission and my recruiter put together a reconsideration packet. In order to be reconsidered, I would have to show some sort of improvement in this packet. so I gathered additional O-6's LORS and my recruiter told me to retake the test. Guess what I scored a 39 EVEN LOWER. Well to make a long story short, we went ahead and submitted the packet anyway. THey lost my paper work it was never processed. I finally got a call last September from a processor in LA and he apologized for losing my packet and had suggested that i retest. Now this is going to be my Third adn Final time. I've studied for months for both tests and I am super scared of taking this my third adn final time and failing. I don't want this to be the end of my Navy Officer dreams! What do you folks suggest I do. is there any other way I can get a commission. I have a BA in Sociology and Minor in Spanish. My GPA was a 3.2. Do you have any suggestions on how to conquer this test guys? Please advise! Thanks and Happy New Year good luck to all applicants.
