BLUF: Understand full concepts through and through, not just how to solve equations.

I just took the new OAR and was very surprised by the format of the test as well as the content.

There is no marking questions and going back to them. (This is because an adaptive test will change the difficulty of your next question depending on if you got the question right or wrong. ie: get a question right, next question will be harder. Get it wrong, and the next question will be easier.) In fact, the test does not say what number question you are on. I cannot remember exactly how it breaks down (due to shock), but I had 40 mins for math and 15 for mechanical.

Math: The majority of my questions were Distance Rate Time questions. I had very few questions requiring straight forward math.

Reading: The type of text on the new OAR is quite different than I had practiced with. I had no iceberg/thomas edison topic paragraphs, this text was more along the lines of law text. Topics were DOD and military heavy; very dense, and official sounding. Essentially dense regs officers would probably have to read and implement in their commands.

Mechanical: I had no questions on gears, types of lever, piston displacement, cams, etc. There was more concepts on heating and electrical than I had practiced. (my fault) I felt there were less questions requiring calculation, and more requiring overall and genuine understanding of mechanical concepts. (The theme of my mistakes)

I took the GRE 2 years ago and was accepted into an ivy league university with my score. I surprisingly thought this test was more difficult than that. Hopefully its user error, I don't want to discourage anyone. #NotAGoodTestTaker #PreferToWriteLongAnalyticalPapers #ActuallyPreferBeerHockeyLeague

Good summary, thanks for putting out to the folks here.

For the love of____, please don't use BLUF or hashtags! BLUF is an abomination that came from the Army, 'Summary' will work just fine, and hashtags are for Twitter. Smiles and all.

I was wondering the same thing. What score did you get? I have two more classes to complete my degree and just started studying for the test.

LK2480, very informative, thank you for posting your experience and being one of the first "on the chopping block" :D

The test sounds tougher but more relevant to today's world, I bet, so that's a good thing. I'm curious as heck but I'm glad I ended up not retaking it, just for safety's sake

I'm sure you did very well on it! If the test adapts to match your level of ability, then it'll always seem pretty difficult, right? It might even be that the more complex the questions you're getting, the better you're doing :)

That's just my guess, but it's a good mindset to have if you start freaking out in the test. Good luck guys!

What was the version you took?

I took the ASTB for the first time in January, shortly after APEX-4 was released. I'm not a shooter or flight gamer, and I struggled with the joystick and throttle. I thought to myself throughout the test, "this couldn't be life." However, as much as a novice I am, I scored 5's respectively on the flight simulation portion. Now that I have a second lifeline, the anticipation is that my score will increase.

Also, would anyone know of a sure-fire mechanical study guide, other than those previously listed. I'm not much of a "mechanic", more of a number cruncher and planning nerd.

How do the MST, RCT, MCT, & ANIT on the ASTB-E compare to those on older version of the ASTB? Are there the same amount of questions/time and do they consist of the same material? When they introduced the ASTB-E did they just add on the NATFI, PBM, & BI-RV subtests and remove the spatial apperception and aviation supplementary tests?

This has been answered in other threads....take some time to find it.
