Navy CEC

I'm a graduate of the University of Alabama (2014) with a degree in Civil Engineering. I finished with a GPA of 2.981 and took a job with a construction company than does DOD contracts. I'm currently working at Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton, Florida completely overhauling their runways on the south field. I'm extremely interested in the CEC and am wondering what the demand is like right now and my chances on being selected for OCS and CEC. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

I can't help you gauge your chances, but maybe providing some additional info could help officer recruiters here.

e.g., How old are you? Have you taken the OAR? What industry credentials do you possess? Do you have your P.E. yet?

Are you only looking at Navy, or other branches, too? (The USAF has a 52,000-person CE force overseeing a $250B physical plant at 166 bases worldwide.)

your GPA is very low for CEC, and CEC is very competitive, you have to go through a panel interview where you can explain any negative things, but you will be up against many others with better grades.

I am 24 years old and haven't taken the OAR yet. I'm bogged down with the project right now but as soon as it slows a bit I plan on starting my application process. I've talked with the Quality Assurance guy for the project at NAVFAC and he said it would be best to contact some at CECOS and have them deal with the application and maybe get a trip together to go tour CECOS. I do not have my PE as I don't have the required number of years of experience yet. I'm primarily interested in Navy, as I have been able to work with NAVFAC and the CEC officers on the project and I like how they handle everything but am not completely closed minded either. Thank you for the link also.

CEC applicants don't take OAR, and for OCS applicants they look for EIT, DCO I would think would look for PE as they expect them to be much more experienced.

pretty sure the 52000 personnel are including all the civilian employees and reservist, given their main command CE command only has 1600 total personnel.

do you have an EIT? without it you have essentially no chance of getting selected.

don't contact CECOS, they can't do anything for you, since you area civilian all paperwork must go in via a NRD

Okay I gotcha. I realize my GPA wasn't great and I would be able to explain the reasons why to the board. However, please correct me if I'm wrong, aren't most applicants generally right out of school with limited experience? Especially experience working directly for NAVFAC. I feel as if that has to have some positive weight

Yes, sir: 52,000 includes ARC (ANG/USAFR), civilians, and maybe contractors (unclear). http://www.afcec.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-150514-034.pdf

AFCEC only has 1,600 personnel (and shrinking), but it's not a command - it's more of a headquarters function to oversee execution for the enterprise. Technically, it's a PSU under a Center (AFIMSC) under a MAJCOM (AFMC). The vast majority of CE members are at the installations in a CES.

I think AF officers + enlisted in CE number about 32,000. How does this compare to Navy CEC force size?

The applicants that are selected often have work experience from internships and such, the CEC picks many that go into the CEC collegiate program so they aren't expected to have work experience, that leaves limited spots for those that are graduates.

They also have to look at can this person get accepted to a Masters program as that is part of the career path.

While work experience will help, you will have to really overcome that GPA, for instance I only saw one person at my NRD picked for CEC that had less than a 3.5 GPA and I feel part of why the selection happened was the person was a female of asian background.

It is about half that, but the numbers in the file you referenced are before they took significant cuts, and it includes guard units

Okay thanks for the info. Is Air Force CE easier to get into or are they relatively the same?
I am not an expert, so hopefully a Navy CEC officer can chime in, but based on web searches it looks like the Navy's CEC force size is smaller than the AF. Since applying to the military is somewhat of a numbers game, total billets available may play a factor in selection, but only AF and USN recruiters would know.

Data point on Navy CEC force size: http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-n...uments/CEC_Monthly_Quad_Chart_2015_11_Nov.pdf
