There are no LDO AEDO's. (Though there are LDO's in acquisition billets).

I spoke with my OPO and he assures me that there are 10 open Ensign billets for AEDO in the Reserves. I also ran across this community brief for AEDO in the reserves here which does show O3 and below (which differs from the Active AEDO community brief), as well as sea time for junior officers. AEDO is starting to sound better.

Thanks for making this threat Ex_AO got some useful information out of it. AEDO is what I had wanted originally but when I started looking into it there wasn't any allocation (this was about this time last year) so with some personal turmoil going on I put things on hold. Now looks to be a good time to get the ball rolling again and with the AEDO billets available so I could drill locally that would be perfect.

Can anyone point me to a good description of what the duties of an AEDO (Aviation Engineering Duty Officer) are?

Ex_AO...My Son Mike is an Reserve AEDO 0-5 living in SDiego @ drilling with FRC SW Det. at China Lake. He is a new member on AW: maxsonic. Drop him a PM, he can probably answer some/all of your AEDO questions.

Max here - hopefully I can provide useful info for those considering pursuing an AEDO DCO application.

Can anyone point me to a good description of what the duties of an AEDO (Aviation Engineering Duty Officer) are?

EX AO - here is a short description of what AEDO's primarily support: http://www.npc.navy.mil/Officer/SYSCOM/Aviation_NAVAIR_SPAWAR.htm

Yes, there are AEDO Ensigns - they access directly into the Navy Reserve through the Direct Commission Officer (DCO) program with a "1515" designator. When I applied for DCO (back in '87), I applied for both AEDO 1515 and AMDO 1525 slots. Luckily, I was selected for a 1515 AEDO slot (had a BS in Aero Engineering at the time).

Competition for Reserve AEDO 1515 and AMDO 1525 DCO spots is very high, a postgraduate degree will help you standout. Enlisted experience also helps. If one holds an engineering degree, I would recommend going for an AEDO slot.

Most Reserve AEDO/AMDO billets are in the NAVAIR Reserve Program (NRP), which provides systems acquisition support with units at Pax and at most Navy Fleet concentration areas. NRP has a homepage on Navy Knowledge Online (NKO) with more info (if you have access).

He said I would be attached to a squadron and if/when they deployed I could go with them (call me weird, but I want to go out on CVs again). However from what I can dredge up, AEDO sounds like a cube/desk job, which is pretty much what I do in my civilian life and I'm looking for new challenges that would benefit me and the USNR. Ideally I want to work with aircraft and be on CVs from time to time, I'm not too picky on exactly what I do.

Part of the Reserve AEDO/AMDO Junior Officer training track includes an additional duty assignment to a Reserve squadron, so it's a good possibility. NRP AEDOs and AMDOs do some desk-based systems acquisition support, however, our focus now includes much more field work helping to get new weapon systems into the fight, and sustaining fielded weapon systems. This involves a strong possibility of multiple mobilizations to active duty for both CONUS and OCONUS assignments in support of GWOT/Overseas Contingency Operations - go in with your eyes open on this!

Dumb question; if I understand correctly, I have to pay my way to/from my drilling location correct? So If I go AEDO and have to go to PAX I will have to pay for my flight to/from Houston. Correct?

Thanks!

There is a possibility you could be assigned to a NRP Unit closer to home - there is one unit located at JRB Ft. Worth. In addition to NAS Pax MD, there are other NRP units located in CA, MN, OH, and FL.

Normally we pay our own way for transportation and expenses (other than lodging) to the unit drill location - good news being that these expenses are now moslty tax deductible. At times you can get paid travel orders to drill at sites other than your home unit location - known as IDTT orders. Annual Training (AT) and Additional Duty Training (ADT) also includes pay for both travel and expenses.

I'm hearing that Reserve AEDO/AMDO recruiting for the NRP is up this year (for both DCO and active duty accessions)...good luck to candidates! Contact me if you have additional questions, or if you need a regional NRP recruiter contact.

Here is a link to the approved 1510 community brief. I didn't think we ever took new ensigns - even in the reserves - but I could be wrong. Not all jobs are in cube farms, but the ones that aren't tend to be flying jobs.

Almost forgot, mo betta links to the Reserve AEDO / AMDO Community Brief gouge:

1515 AEDO
1525 AMDO

I really appreciate the information. I'm pushing forward and about ready to submitt my application to the OSO, then I'm in for the waiting game! Only wild card at this point is getting all my references send their LORs.

Maxsonic or anyone else - I have been looking into a Navy commission for the past year. I just recently graduated with a BS in Aerospace Engineering, and was wanting to follow some of my friends from college into the nuclear side of things. However, my recruiter stated that the only area that I could possibly be a strong candidate in would be AMDO, mainly due to my age of 30 and no prior service. I am curious to know if it would be possble to transfer from AMDO to AEDO after a certain amount of years of service. Or, has anyone ever gone in as an AEDO as an Ensign active duty that was not in aviation, as it seems most AEDOs come from aviators. I have no problem being an AMDO, but the AEDO area seems to fit my degree a little better and sounds more exciting from my point of view.

Questions for Maxsonic or anybody with knowledge/experience to answer:

1) If you apply and are selected to a unit in San Diego, will you work at NAVAIR or SPAWAR? Or some other location?

2) I understand that the commitment for a non-prior service AEDO DCO in the Navy Reserve is 8 years total: 3 years in selected reserve, and then 5 as individual ready reserve. How often will you be activated during the selected reserve period? What about the individual ready reserve period?

3) How long are the deployments?

4) Where do the deployments take you?

Thank you for your time.

Been off the board awhile, here's a belated answer:

If you get a Navy Reserve Direct Commission Officer (DCO) as an AMDO (1525) or AEDO (1525) it is highly probable you will be placed in the NAVAIR Reserve Program (NRP), which has the most AEDO/AMDO billets. Although the career track is slightly different, in the NRP AEDOs and AMDOs do similar work and taskings, and serve together in NRP units. I am an AEDO DCO and have served in several NRP billets which are primary coded for AMDO (and secondary for AEDO). It works the other way as well. You can apply for a designator change once you get in...one of my peers who was commissioned as an AEDO later switched designators to go active duty as a Full-Time Support (FTS) AMDO (1527). The key is getting in - I would your recruiter's advice on this.
Note, answer above applies to Navy Reserve Direct Commissions ... the story is different for active duty AEDOs and AMDOs. You are correct, most active duty AEDOs and and active duty accessions into the Navy Reserve AEDO community do come from Aviation Designators (13XX).

Questions for Maxsonic or anybody with knowledge/experience to answer:

1) both are possible in San Diego

2) You must be prepared to be mobilized immediately after joining, it's why we have a Reserve. Be prepared to be mobilized at least one year out of every five served. Last I heard there was a "dwell time" policy that allowed for 5:1 dwell time ratio (i.e. if you served 6 months mobilized, you wouldn't be mobilized for the next 30 months after returning home). Of course this policy could change at a moment's notice, talk to your recruiter for latest policy guidance.

3) The Individual Augmentee (IA) deployments I and most of my peers have done range from 8 months to one year.
4) All over the world...there are plenty of mob opportunities suppporting NAVAIR related missions and other Navy IA requirements. In general, there is an ability to plan mobilizations providing NAVAIR support to Combatant Commanders worldwide. If you PM me I can forward you a recent article which has example missions we support.
Sorry 'bout the delayed response, good luck in the DCO app process!

Any recent AEDO or AMDO applicants? I am interested in submitting my kit next year. Just wondering what the forecast is as far as FY15 hiring for these positions? Any recent gouge on speeding up the application tempo/ locating interviewers? I'd like to hear anyone's story from submitting kit to finally drilling.

Hello CaptainFlyByWire,

I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to respond to this post. Welcome to AW!

I’m a newly commissioned AMDO and I will give you a brief rundown of my application experience. My timeline is as follows;
Mar 2012 – First meeting with recruiter and started all the paperwork.
June 2012 – First AMDO Officer interview
Aug 2012 – Second AMDO Officer interview
Sep 2012 – My Recruiter submitted my final kit to the board.
May 2013 – Board met
June 2013 – Professional Recommended by the board
July 2013 – MEPS
Aug 2013 – Comm Docs and Commissioned.
Aug 2013 – Present – Drilling at a unit in JAX support the FRC mission.

I haven’t heard too much about FY15 boards but I know the numbers that are selected are fairly small. My board had four selected out of 27, I think. I see that you were an ATC. I was an Avionics Master Sergeant in the Air Force / AF Reserves before getting selected for AMDO. I know that our community values prior enlisted time and your time in the Chiefs Mess will be a very positive highlight in your package.

Where are you located in California? I might be able to reach out and find an interviewer for you there depending on where you are located.

Good luck with your kit. Let me know if I can help.

Hi Captain FBW and all,
Just wondering how your process went if you've progressed any further than I have at the moment. I'm putting together my package for the rolling AEDO (1515) board that is supposed (according to my recruiter) to convene in November. She tells me the demand for AEDOs is fairly high this FY so the odds are more in our favor at the next board. I'm a 25 y/o Male with a BS in aerospace engineering and an imminent MS in systems engineering with three years design/operational analysis experience at [Aircraft Company] on the [narrowbody commercial aircraft] and its derivatives.

Maybe MaxSonic or someone else can help me understand what duty as an ensign in NRP will involve? It's a small community and there's really not much specific information out there on what kind of work a new AEDO does right off the bat. The officer in this video seems to have had particularly interesting duty assignments so far; is her experience typical or is she the exception where the rest of the community is marooned in cube farms? I'm kind of trying to get away from a 100% office environment since that's what I do for my day job.

Thanks for any information you can give me!
