Better hurry. I have a feeling things are going to become unobtainable sooner than we'd like them to.
See photo above. It's sitting in my safe. :) And that's going to come down to whether or not the House flips, IMO.

An awful lot of what's shown in this thread is or will soon be illegal/unobtainable with the new BS they just rammed through in CA, where your freedoms are a vanishing myth...

What is the no kidding impact of the most recent legislation that was passed in California?

What is the no kidding impact of the most recent legislation that was passed in California?

1.) Rifles with detachable magazines can no longer be sold after 2016. Existing detachable-magazine rifles have to be sold/stored out of state, registered, or permanently modified such that the magazine cannot be detached (e.g. no more CA "bullet buttons" unless it's registered as an "assault weapon"). Also, no transfers of registered "assault weapons" (now defined as any rifle with a detachable magazine) within the state, unless they can be permanently modified to no longer have detachable magazines.

2.) No more possession of any magazines >10rds. The previous restriction from 2000 was against buying, selling, or importing said mags, but so-called "pre-ban" mags were allegedly OK to keep. After July 2017, all existing mags >10 rds must be sold, turned in, or destroyed, unless you're prior LE.

3.) It will be illegal to loan a gun to a friend without a state background check. So sorry, you can't borrow my pistol for that NRA course.

4.) An I.D. and background check will be required to buy ammo in the state, and a database of all ammunition buyers will be created by the state of CA. (starts in July 2019).

Additional info can be found here, here, and here. The third link provides an interesting Q&A.

Holy shit how did this happen (rhetorical question only)

So in effect, "no AR's" but also, no 10/22's either.

Would a M-1 Garand come under these laws?

Historically, rimfires weren't considered an "AW," regardless of configuration. I've lost track if that's changed with the recent legislation.

Also, no one is really sure if "ARs" are going away. Per the law, the way it's currently written, you could register your AR as an "Assault Weapon," which would exempt it (confiscation is not part of the law) and run it in any configuration. Lots of people are waiting to hear how the DOJ will handle this.

Would a M-1 Garand come under these laws?

No. The definition of a California "Assault Weapon" is very specific, to include a definition of what a "pistol grip" is. If the weapon doesn't have a legally defined "pistol grip," it's not an "Assault Weapon" (among some other features that don't apply to the Garand). This has been the case in CA for some time. I ran a "featureless" AR when I was stationed there and while it was weird, it ran fine and I could drop mags to my heart's content. I could also run > 10 round mags at the time. Obviously that's not the case once the mag limit law takes effect.

While the new laws (which haven't taken effect yet) are ridiculous, it's not the end of the world for ARs in CA. The magazine law is probably the more troublesome legislation in the short-term.

gun store near me has good deal, 10% over wholesale for active or retired military, I wish I found out about it earlier!

How much does that save you over typical prices? Retail markup on some guns isn't much more than that.

Some sweet glass, how do you like the ELCAN?

Nice Elcan. How do you like it? I debated, but got a Nightforce NXS instead.

It's got its pluses and minuses. I've had it for almost a year. Lost of the same things you read about online are what you'll find. FOV and eye-relief are better than an ACOG, but it's heavier. Mine isn't a SU-230, but the civilian version, so the stadia are thicker than optimal, but they still work just fine. I need to run it some more to see how it does closer in. It's definitely slower than a RDS, and there's a little bit of tube suck, but it seems more forgiving than an ACOG or full-on tube scope, and on a good day, faster than both.

Nice.

I've run it a bit more, and actually on a timer. I've found it consistently (albeit only slightly so) faster than a Vortex HD 1-6, and fairly on par with an Aimpoint running the same simple course of fire. It's the same weight as a MK6 but without the flickering red dot. Then again, you're limited to a BDC versus an actual mil reticle, which might matter to you. I tried taking the Elcan out to 400y this weekend and we couldn't find the impact to adjust, and using the "4" stadia just wasn't giving me an impact from that little 10.3" barrel. The next time I go out to that long range, I'll try it again. I know I'm capable making hits at that range, I just have to figure out where the hell the bullet is going in order to adjust.

Overall, though, I'm enjoying it. I was debating running it this weekend in a competition, but I think it will mostly be 25y and in this time, but I may run it next month.
